Greenville Lions, Lady Lions look for district soccer wins

Feb. 2—Greenville's Lions are still looking for their first win in District 13-5A boys soccer following a tough 1-0 loss at home on Tuesday night to Lucas Lovejoy.

Lovejoy scored a goal in the first half and turned back some promising scoring opportunities for the Lions to go 2-0 in District 13-5A play and 7-2 for the season.

The 4-3-1 Lions dropped to 0-2 in district play.

"They played a solid game and very good defensively," said Lions coach Christopher James. "Just let one get away from us."

James said the Lions "connected the ball well" but just couldn't put one "in the back of the net."

Lovejoy's goalkeeper turned away a couple of shots on goal by the Lions' scoring leader Caleb Salazar in the first half.

"Yeah, we had some opportunities," said James. "Just unfortunately didn't score."

The Lions lost their district opener last week to McKinney North, 7-2. Henry Briceno and Josh Rojas scored for the Lions.

The Lions are to play next on Friday at Melissa. The varsity match is to start at 5:30 p.m.
