Gossip: Ozil 'tells team-mates he will move to Man Utd', Real Madrid 'regret not selling Bale', Chelsea players 'unhappy with Conte'

Gunning for a move: Mesut Ozil wants to join Manchester United, according to reports

We are so silly. We’ve spent thousands of hours speculating about where Mesut Ozil will be playing his football next season, when the man himself has known all along. And now he has revealed it.

The Mirror claims the enigmatic German playmaker has “told his Arsenal team-mates” that he will be signing for Manchester United.

He’s very confident of this fact, apparently, and has been telling anyone who will listen that the transfer is “in the bag”.

Then again, people make all kinds of outlandish boasts to their mates. Like the kid at school who always insisted he had pulled loads of girls while he was “on holiday”. Oh how convenient.

So do we believe Ozil? Or, more to the point, do we believe the Mirror?

The tabloid says Mesut is ready to make the “bombshell switch” in January, which would at least make the Gunners a bit of cash rather than having to stomach their former star player moving to Old Trafford on a freebie.

It bolsters its claim by reporting that “United boss Jose Mourinho has publicly admitted that he regards Ozil as the best No10 in the world”.

Which is true, but that was about five years ago and he might have changed his mind by now. On current form, Ozil wouldn’t even be the best No10 at Man Utd.

Madrid ‘wish they had sold Bale’

Nowadays, Mourinho might be more attracted to the possibility of signing Gareth Bale instead. The Star says Real Madrid “regret” not flogging the Welshman to United in the summer and replacing him with Kylian Mbappe.

Real president Florentino Perez is now “keen to get rid of Bale as soon as possible” and United could return for him – possibly at a cut-price fee – next summer.

Meanwhile, Arsenal’s dreams of finally signing Madrid striker Karim Benzema could be scuppered by Tottenham.

The Express says Real have offered the 29-year-old Frenchman to Spurs in “part-exchange” for Harry Kane. They hope this would bring Kane’s price tag down from £180m to “roughly £108m”. We’ll see what Daniel Levy thinks about that.

And in the Times, we learn that Chelsea’s players are “unhappy with Antonio Conte’s regime” at Stamford Bridge and believe his punishing training schedule is “hampering their title defence”.

A Chelsea manager winning the league one season and then losing the dressing room the next? Where have we heard that one before?

Elsewhere, Manchester City will make two major signing in January, including Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez (Manchester Evening News), former Chelsea midfielder Ramires is set to move to Inter Milan on loan from Jiangsu Suning (Mail) and Man Utd are interested in Benfica’s “17-year-old teen starlet” Umaro Embalo (Sun). We could have worked out from his age that he was a teenager but thanks for clarifying, Sun journos.
