Gossip: RB Leipzig tell Liverpool how much it will cost to 'release' Naby Keita early, Crystal Palace transfer boost and more

Naby Keita could join Liverpool early if an additional fee is paid.

Danny Murphy hasn’t been particularly impressed with Naby Keita. He thinks he’s “like Jordan Henderson”.

But Liverpool, by contrast, are very impressed. So impressed that they spent all of last summer spending more than £50m just so that they could buy him the following summer, and all of this January offering an extra £13m just so they can buy him this January.

So will Reds fans soon get the chance to see the Guinean midfielder in a Liverpool shirt and judge for themselves whether he is any better than Jordan Henderson? Maybe.

The Mirror reports that Keita’s club, RB Leipzig, have “softened their stance” on letting the 22-year-old move to Anfield six months early.

Previously the Germans were adamant Keita would stay, but they have evidently decided they probably aren’t going to win the Bundesliga this season anyway – because Bayern Munich are going to win it like they do every year – and that £13m could come in handy. Or to be precise, that “between £13m and £17.5m” could come in handy.

For Liverpool, spending £17.5m on what would essentially be a six-month loan should sound like a crazy idea, but money takes on a slightly different perspective when you’ve just received £142m for one player.

Firmino offered new deal

Another man to benefit from the Reds’ recent boost of wealth is Roberto Firmino, who the Telegraph says will be offered a new contract to keep him at Anfield “for the rest of his career”.

He’s only 26, and he still has two years remaining on his current deal, but after seeing one Brazilian leave in Philippe Coutinho, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp is determined not to leave himself completely Brazilianless. Even Lucas has gone, for Pete’s sake!

There are also some interesting transfer manoeuvrings happening at the wrong end of the Premier League table. Crystal Palace are “confident” of sealing a £10m deal for West Ham’s Diafra Sakho, who has scored four times as many goals as Eagles striker Christian Benteke this season despite starting 12 fewer games (Sun).

Meanwhile, the Hammers have been told to they will have to pay £15m for Bournemouth midfielder Harry Arter, which is substantially more than the east Londoners’ opening offer of £5m (Mirror). In good news for the Cherries, West Ham bought Robert Snodrgrass for £10m last January after making an opening offer of £3m, so they have history with making pointlessly low bids.

Elsewhere, Huddersfield have agreed a £14m deal to sign Norwich City’s former Tottenham midfielder Alex Pritchard (Mail), Fulham have insisted that Man Utd and Spurs target Ryan Sessegnon will not be sold this month (Telegraph) and Martin O’Neill is expected to take Roy Keane with him to the Potteries if and when he is appointed as the new manager of Stoke City (Independent).
