GoFundMe for Humboldt Broncos surpasses $7 million in donations

Update: The GoFundMe account created to assist victims of the Humboldt Broncos tragedy has now raised an established target of $7 million.

Less than 17 hours after it was launched, a GoFundMe account organized to raise funds for the victims and families of the junior hockey team received in excess of $1 million in donations from nearly 17,000 contributors.

The online fundraiser has continued to surpass updated targets since its launch, with an outpouring of support shown for those affected by the horrific events of Friday evening in northeastern Saskatchewan .

Ten hockey players and five others were killed when the bus carrying the Broncos was involved in a collision with a truck on Highway 35 while en route to Nipawin for a playoff game.

Humboldt’s head coach, the team captain and the team’s play-by-play announcer are among the casualties of the unthinkable tragedy.

It’s not clear at this point what caused the crash. The truck driver was apparently uninjured.

The Vancouver Canucks, Winnipeg Jets and Chicago Blackhawks are among several NHL teams to announce contributions to the fundraising efforts, with the Jets and Blackhawks wearing “BRONCOS” in lieu of nameplates for Saturday’s game. The Jets will also donate proceeds from the 50/50 draw at Bell MTS Place to the relief efforts, and the Edmonton Oilers have since announced that they will do the same.

Organizers of the GoFundMe account are working with the Broncos to “ensure funds will be dispersed to the families at an appropriate time.
