GIRLS BB: Sectionals get moving on Tuesday

Jan. 29—The IHSAA girls basketball postseason begins Tuesday with sectionals tipping off across the state. Locally, Kokomo Tribune-area schools are entered in seven sectionals, with ranked locals in action in the Class 3A Twin Lakes Sectional, the Class 2A North Miami Sectional, and the Class 2A Delphi Sectional.

—The Twin Lakes Sectional has a claim to be the best in the state as three teams ranked in Class 3A are in the field. The sectional opens with West Lafayette (14-9) against Frankfort (2-21) at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. No. 11 Western (16-5) hits the court at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday against defending champion Twin Lakes (14-9). North Montgomery (9-14) and No. 6 Benton Central (22-3) play Wednesday's second game. And No. 3 Rensselaer (22-1) has the bye and faces the WL-Frankfort winner at 6:30 p.m. Friday in the opening semifinal.

The Panthers beat TL 59-45 on Dec. 9 in Monticello. Benton Central beat Western twice during the regular season.

—The Class 2A North Miami Sectional is a five-team gathering with just one opening-round game, Wabash (11-11) vs. Winamac (12-9) at 7 p.m. Tuesday. Defending champ North Miami (8-12) and No. 10 Cass (19-3) play the opening semifinal at 6 p.m. Friday, with Pioneer (6-15) awaiting the Wabash-Winamac winner in the second semi.

Cass beat North Miami 46-31 in a Three Rivers Conference game on Jan. 10 at NM. Cass went on to win a share of the TRC title.

—No. 5 Carroll has a bye in the six-team Class 2A Delphi Sectional. The two bye teams play in opposite semis. The sectional opens Tuesday with Seeger (15-7) vs. defending champ Lafayette Central Catholic (12-11) at 6 p.m., followed by Covington (10-12) vs. Clinton Prairie (6-16). Carroll (20-3) awaits the Seeger-LCC winner in Friday's 6 p.m. semi, followed by Delphi (14-8) vs. the Covington-CP winner.

—In Class 4A, Kokomo hosts an all-North Central Conference six-team sectional. Defending champ Harrison (11-12) vs. Marion (2-19) opens the tourney at 6 p.m. Tuesday, followed by Kokomo (14-9) vs. Logansport (4-18) at approximately 7:45. Lafayette Jeff (4-19) has a bye and faces the Harrison-Marion winner in Friday's first semi at 6 p.m., followed by McCutcheon (19-4) vs. the Kokomo-Logan winner at approximately 7:45.

Kokomo beat Logan 54-25 on Jan. 5 in Memorial Gym.

—Three local schools are in action at the seven-team Class 3A Maconaquah Sectional. The opening game pits Mississinewa (12-10) vs. Maconaquah (10-10) at 7 p.m. Tuesday. On Wednesday, Peru (3-19) meets Northwestern (6-15) at 6 p.m., followed by Bellmont (15-7) vs. Oak Hill (11-10). Defending champ and No. 2-ranked Norwell (18-4) has the bye and plays the Mississinewa-Mac winner at 6 p.m. Friday in the semis.

Mac edged visiting Mississinewa 40-38 on Dec. 20.

—The seven-team Class 2A Elwood Sectional also features three local schools. The sectional opens with Elwood (3-19) vs. defending champ and No. 4-ranked Eastbrook (20-2) at 7 p.m. Tuesday. Wednesday's first matchup has Taylor (1-20) vs. Eastern (6-16) at 6 p.m., followed by Blackford (17-6) vs. Tipton (0-22). Madison-Grant (7-15) plays the Elwood-Eastbrook winner in Friday's first semi at 6 p.m.

Eastern beat Taylor 54-15 on Nov. 10 at Taylor.

—In Class A, the four-team Anderson Prep Sectional advances directly to Friday's semifinals, where Cowan (4-17) plays Daleville (7-13) at 6 p.m., followed by defending champion Tri-Central (8-13) vs. Anderson Prep (11-12).

Championship games are Saturday night.
