Girls basketball: Lady Cougars celebrate Senior Night and win

Jan. 18—The Lady Cougars closed out their MHC portion of the regular season with a convincing 46-19 win over visiting Edinburgh.

South improves to 12-9 on the season and 5-1 in the MHC. Edinburgh drops to 3-17 overall and 1-2 in conference action.

The Lady Cougars also celebrated Senior Night for Molly Eden and Brayley Sundal.

South jumped out to a 15-4 lead after the first quarter. The Lady Cougars scored the first 12 points of the contest. Makayla Somers scored the first two points of the game. Paige McQueen's sixth point made it 12-0 South. Eden added three points, including a free throw to give South the 11-point lead after the first eight minutes.

South outscored the Lady Lancers 11-8 in the second quarter. McQueen scored four points in the quarter. Makayla Somers added three points. Kiley Best hit a bucket. Eden and Makayla Puckett both hit one free throw.

South put the game away in the second half, outscoring Edinburgh 20-7. The Lady Cougars got eight points from Makayla Somers in the third quarter, sparking the Lady Cougars to a 32-17 lead heading to the fourth quarter.

The Lady Cougars' defense held Edinburgh to just two points in the fourth quarter. Best scored six of South eight points in the final frame en route to the 46-19 win.

Makayla Somers led the Lady Cougars with 17 points. Best and McQueen both had 10 points. Eden and Taylor Somers both scored four points. Puckett had one point.

Eden grabbed a team-high nine rebounds. Makayla Somers and Taylor Somers both had six rebounds. Sundal pulled down four rebounds. Puckett dished out a team-high five assists.

Kenna Streeval led Edinburgh with seven points. Kinzie Purvis added four points. Alix Streeval and Kyah Streeval both had three points. Lillie Goff finished with two points.

South hosts Trinity Lutheran (10-8) at noon Saturday.
