Gillispie named Rose City Classic MVP; Blanton nabs All-tourney laud

Mar. 4—TROUP — Troup closed the book on the non-conference portion of its scheduled over the weekend by going 3-3 in the Tyler-Rose City Classic.

Troup went 3-3 in the 16-team tournament and came in fourth place.

The Lady Tigers churned out a 5-1 win over Mabank, topped Malakoff, 2-1, and beat Mineola, 4-1.

On Saturday, the Maroon and White lost, 1-0 (8 innings), to a talented Van team that stands 18-3.

Taylor Gillispie, a junior, was named as the Most Valuable Player in the Rose City Classic.

Gillispie went 3-1 in the tournament and pitched 27.2 innings. She held opposing batters to just 12 hits and four earned runs.

Gillispie, who notched her 500th-career strike out in Troup's win over Mabank Friday, recorded 52 strike outs in Tyler.

At the plate she batted .412 and had a .412 On Base Percentage and a .588 Slugging Percentage.

Gillispie's battery mate, Bailey Blanton, a senior, was elected to the All-Tournament team in Tyler.

Blanton batted .333, had a .412 On Base Percentage and maintained a .535 Slugging Percentage.

"We are extremely proud of these two girls," Troup head softball coach Sam Weeks said. "Not only for their performance on the field, but for how well they lead our team off of the field as well."

The Lady Tigers (9-6) will open their district campaign at 6 p.m. Tuesday by traveling to Jefferson.
