Chelsea defender Alfie Gilchrist says it was "a no-brainer" to sign a new deal with the club.

The 20-year-old has agreed a new contract that runs until 2026 with an option of a further year.

Gilchrist, who joined the Blues' academy as an under-11, has made 12 senior appearances for the side this season, with his debut coming against Crystal Palace at Stamford Bridge in December.

He has made his way up through the academy age groups and captained the youth teams at bother under-18 and under-21 level.

Speaking to the club website, Gilchrist said: "Signing this contract at Chelsea is a massive achievement for me and my family.

"It was a no-brainer and every time I've signed a contract here it has felt nicer and nicer. But now I want to keep on pushing on and keep improving."

Chelsea's co-sporting directors Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley added: "It has been a pleasure to see him continue his development within the club by breaking into the first-team squad this season. We are looking forward to seeing him progress further in the years to come."
