Giants training camp: 3 undrafted free agents standing out

2020 is not going to be the year where scores of undrafted free agents make NFL rosters and go on to stardom. The coronavirus restrictions have basically shut down all of the avenues needed for these players to show there wares to coaches.

The New York Giants have several undrafted rookies in camp who will have to break through during practice sessions as there are no preseason games this summer for them to get a traditional audition.

Here are three UDFAs that could find themselves on the Giants’ roster come Week 1 against Pittsburgh.

WR Binjimen Victor

The 6-foot-4, 200-pound Binjimen Victor played all four seasons at Ohio State but went undrafted in this year’s deep wide receiver class. Is he likely a better prospect than many of the player who did get drafted? Yes, and the Giants are hoping that is the case.

“Victor got lost a bit amid the array of offensive talent at Ohio State, as did his teammate, Austin Mack, another rookie free-agent receiver and former Buckeye trying to make an impression,” writes New York Post reporter Paul Schwartz. “I could see Mack or Victor making a strong push to stay around, either on the roster or the expanded practice squad.”

Victor’s large frame will also help his chances as the Giants don’t really have a big target on the outside for Daniel Jones. Victor can also be used as a red zone option.

RB Javon Leake

Javon Leake was signed to compete for the returner spots but he has a excellent shot to make the roster outright.

The former Maryland standout had a stellar college career as a special teamer and we know how the Giants love special team players. Plus, the Giants don’t have a lot of running backs in camp this year.

“Leake, he will be given every opportunity to show what he can do in the return game,” writes Schwartz. “He could really be hurt, though, by the absence of any preseason games. Rookies always get a shot at kickoff and punt returns in the preseason, but those opportunities this summer are limited to practice. This means the weekly intrasquad scrimmages Joe Judge has planned will be ultra-important for Leake.”

DB Jarren Williams

Williams originally signed with the Arizona Cardinals this spring but did not stick. The Giants scooped him up two weeks ago and the former UAlbany Great Dane has made the most of his opportunity.

With the Giants suddenly short on depth at corner, Williams could sneak onto this roster. Head coach Joe Judge isn’t discriminating against players who were drafted and those who weren’t.

“Look, the program you come from is really irrelevant,” Judge said. “Some guys have a little bit more exposure to certain kinds of schemes or vocabulary. That may give them a jump-start initially, but really wherever you come from, you have to learn this level of football. I’ve dealt with a lot of guys from small schools, guys who had to change positions, and they’ve been able to do that successfully in the NFL. Once you get your foot in the door, all that matters is what you do here.”

That bodes well for all of the players listed here and even those who weren’t.
