Giants get three in ninth to beat Braves 4-3
Joe Panik capped a three-run ninth inning with a two-out, two-strike, two-RBI single Tuesday night, rallying the San Francisco Giants to a 4-3 win over the visiting Atlanta Braves.
After right-hander Julio Teheran had made his fourth straight solid start, the Braves took a 3-1 lead into the last of the ninth. Atlanta got within one out of a win before Kevin Pillar stroked a single to score Brandon Crawford, getting the Giants within one.
After Pillar stole second and took third on Pablo Sandoval's pinch-hit, infield single, Mac Williamson pinch-ran for Sandoval and also stole second, putting the potential tying and winning runs in scoring position.
That's when Panik, with a full count, poked a pitch from Luke Jackson (2-1) into right field, easily scoring the two baserunners for the walk-off win.
Jackson is now 6-for-10 on save chances this season.
Trevor Gott (2-0) got credit for the win after pitching a scoreless top of the ninth.
Nick Markakis, Brian McCann and Freddie Freeman drove in runs for the Braves, who were seeking their fifth straight win on the road.
Giants rookie Shaun Anderson kept his team in the game early on, but he couldn't match pitches with the red-hot Teheran.
The veteran limited the Giants to three hits and one run in 5 2/3 innings. He walked three and struck out six.
After going 2-4 with a 5.35 ERA through the month of April, Teheran has allowed just two runs and a total of 10 hits in four May starts, going 1-0.
His ERA has dropped to 3.67.
After Markakis doubled home Dansby Swanson in the top of the first, the Giants got their only run off Teheran in the last of the inning on a two-out, RBI double by Evan Longoria.
McCann's RBI in the sixth came on a sacrifice fly off Giants reliever Reyes Moronta, who relieved Anderson with two on and no outs in the tie game.
Rookie Austin Riley's fly ball advanced Josh Donaldson to third base before McCann delivered the man from third.
Anderson was charged with two runs on eight hits in five-plus innings. He struck out three and did not walk a batter.
Freeman's RBI single off Sam Dyson increase the Atlanta lead in the seventh, giving the Braves' bullpen a two-run cushion, which wasn't enough.
Panik and Buster Posey finished with two hits each for the Giants, who collected four hits in the ninth inning after having had just five in the first eight innings.
Markakis, Swanson, Donaldson and Ronald Acuna Jr. had two hits apiece for Atlanta, which won the series opener 4-1 on Monday night.
