The New York Giants signed wide receiver Canaan Severin Friday.

Severin signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers as an undrafted free agent out of the University of Virginia last season. He spent all of last season on injured reserve. Severin caught two passes for 24 yards in last week’s preseason opener between the Giants and Steelers.

Severin was released by the Steelers Monday after suffering an undisclosed illness. He became expendable after the return of Martavis Bryant.

Severin takes the roster spot formerly occupied by Keeon Johnson. Johnson left practice Thursday with what was later discovered to be a broken foot. He had surgery Friday and will likely be placed on injured reserve, ending his rookie season. Severin and Johnson were teammates at Virginia.

The Giants also signed wide receiver Ed Eagan. Eagan signed with the Dallas Cowboys as an undrafted free agent last season. He also spent parts of last season with the Cleveland Browns and Buffalo Bills. Eagan replaces Kevin Snead, whose hamstring injury kept him out of the preseason opener.

Severin and Eagan have never played in an NFL regular season game.

The Giants were in need of wide receivers. In addition to the injuries to Johnson and Snead, Dwayne Harris (upper body) and Darius Powe (hamstring) did not practice Friday.

Severin and Eagan face an uphill battle to make the Giants’ 53-man roster. They are joining the team in the middle of August and have limited time to make good impressions on the coaching staff. It is unlikely that either player will play in Monday night’s preseason game at the Cleveland Browns.

Odell Beckham Jr., Brandon Marshall, Sterling Shepard, and Harris are going to make the Giants’ opening day roster. Severin and Eagan have to work extremely hard if they want to join them.
