Giants select WR Kadarius Toney in latest CBS Sports mock draft
It’s been a relatively dull year for the New York Giants when it comes to mock drafts. Most seem to focus on the same handful of players, including Alabama wide receivers DeVonta Smith and Jaylen Waddle, Florida tight end Kyle Pitts, Michigan edge rusher Kwity Paye and Miami edge rusher Gregory Rousseau.
However, Chris Trapasso of CBS Sports is here to break the monotony.
In Trapasso’s latest mock draft, he has the Giants passing on the likes of Paye and Rousseau, and digging a bit deeper into the wide receiver pool with Ja’Marr Chase, Smith, Waddle and Pitts already off the board. They end up with Florida’s Kadarius Toney.
Dave Gettleman loves throwing everyone for a loop in the draft, and he does so again with Toney here, although the Florida product is precisely the type of playmaker Danny Dimes needs.
We could be wrong, but this is the very first time we recall seeing Toney mocked to the Giants.
At 6-foot and 193 pounds, Toney seems somewhat undersized for what the Giants are looking for. However, with the recent release of Golden Tate, it’s entirely possible they look for someone to fill in at the slot position while leaving Sterling Shepard on the outside.
Still, even in that scenario, the Giants would need a genuine WR1 or TE1 for Daniel Jones to toss the ball up to in the red zone or end zone. And is Toney really a viable option all the way up at No. 11? If the Giants end up targeting him, it seems like an opportune time for general manager Dave Gettleman to trade back a bit, recoup some additional picks and still land Toney.
It’s nice to see a new name mocked to the Giants, but it just doesn’t feel like a bit based on need and Jason Garrett’s offensive scheme.
