Why Giants safety's DeVonta Smith troll attempt is so dumb originally appeared on NBC Sports Philadelphia

After years of one-sided domination by the Eagles, it seems the Giants and their fans are finally ready to make Eagles-Giants a legitimate rivalry again.

The Eagles incensed the Big Blue fanbase and the team's players with their Week 17 throwaway performance last year, which kept the G-Men out of the playoffs. (Boo hoo, win more games.) Then the Eagles traded up and snagged DeVonta Smith, who the Giants were targeting, in this past weekend's NFL Draft.

So what do the Giants fans and players respond with? A... meme.

Specifically, a context-less meme that doesn't make any sense, posted by a Giants fanpage on Instagram and then interestingly shared by Giants safety Jabrill Peppers, who thought it was hilarious:

Yeah, okay.

For starters, Peppers wasn't even drafted by the Giants. He was drafted by the Browns in 2017 and spent two years in Cleveland before being traded to New York in the Odell Beckham Jr. deal. So... Peppers doesn't even firsthand experience with being drafted by the Giants' organization!

Also, Smith's straight-ish face in his mandated Roger Goodell photos is reminiscent of a viral moment from a certain superstar who loves playing in Philadelphia.

Remember Joel Embiid's stoic face after being picked No. 3 overall?

For a more accurate picture of how Smith feels about getting to play in the best sports city in the country, Peppers ought to listen to the latest episode of Takeoff with John Clark, where Smith talked about his initial thoughts on his new home:

"I heard this is a wild fanbase, and if they're with you, they're with you. If you love football, you want to be in a place like this."

Yep, real disgruntled.

In any case, the Giants are 1-3 vs. the Eagles during Peppers' time in New York, 1-7 since Peppers entered the league, and 5-15 over the last decade. He probably wants to save the trash talk until those numbers turn around a little.
