Just nine days ago, the Giants owned a lowly 8-16 record. They had the second-worst record in the NL and figured to be sellers at the Aug. 31 MLB trade deadline.
But in this sprint of a 60-game season, the Giants have turned on the jets and would be the eighth and final NL playoff team if the season ended following Tuesday night's 10-8 11-inning win over the Los Angeles Dodgers. Not only would the Giants be in the playoffs right now, but they would also be facing their rivals in a three-game first-round series.
This actually would be the first time the Giants would ever play the Dodgers in the postseason, too. As MLB Network's Jon Morosi noted, the Giants and Dodgers played three-game tiebreakers to determine the NL pennant in 1951 and 1962, but those technically were regular-season games.
Yes, that means Bobby Thomson's "Shot Heard 'Round the World" actually was considered a regular-season game.
If @MLB playoffs began today, the @Dodgers and @SFGiants would meet in the *postseason* for the first time. 👀 @MLBNetwork had a great graphic on this during #MLBCentral. The Giants now are 4-4 against the first-place Dodgers this season. While the NL West leaders have had a tough time against San Francisco, they're 18-5 against everyone else.
If the Giants beat the Dodgers on Wednesday night at Oracle Park, they would be a .500 team for the first time since Aug. 2. The Giants' schedule following this three-game series against the Dodgers seems to be in their favor, too.
Going into the season, the Giants were expected to be closer to a top draft pick than the playoffs. They haven't made the postseason since 2016, and aren't a team full of superstars, especially after Buster Posey opted out.
But with Joey Bart onboard and a red-hot Brandon Belt crushing the ball, the Giants could claw their way into the playoffs, and face none other than the Dodgers in Round 1.
