Giants’ Brian Daboll giving Mike Kafka a play-calling tryout during OTAs

New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll has not yet decided who will call plays during the 2022 regular season but at least for right now, that duty belongs to offensive coordinator Mike Kafka.

Kafka has been the man in charge throughout organized team activities and so far it’s gone well. But that doesn’t necessarily mean that’s how things will remain.

“I think Dabs kind of touched on that. Right now in Phase 3, we’re just taking it kind of day by day. I’m calling the plays for the quarterbacks in practice, and then we’ll let Dabs evaluate that, and he has every right to evaluate how he wants to handle that,” Kafka, who has never before called plays, told reporters last week.

Although he was not guaranteed play-calling duties when he signed on, Kafka acknowledged that joining the Giants was a dream for he and his family. There was no way he could pass up the opportunity, even if it meant leaving Kansas City.

“This opportunity was something that was special to me and my family. It wasn’t just something I took on a whim. I wasn’t just going to go to any team. It had to be built the right way with the people, the Mara family, Dabs, Joe (Schoen), the players that we had here. So it was all that encompassed,” Kafka said.

Kafka will be happy even if he doesn’t land the play-calling duties, but admits he’d very much like to be in control on game day.

“I think every offensive coordinator aspires to call plays, so yes,” Kafka said. “You have to have a feel for the game, understand what your players do best, put them in a good spot to be successful, understanding what the defense is presenting you and how you can attack it. So it’s kind of all encompassing.”
