Giants’ Andrew Thomas focused on ‘getting better every day’

New York Giants left tackle Andrew Thomas overcame a rough start to his professional career to become one of the NFL’s top tackles. Last year, he was named a second-team All-Pro.

Thomas will take the honors but has no intention of resting on them.

“For me, I’m trying to get better every day regardless of the accolades,” Thomas told reporters at the team’s OTAs on Thursday. “Obviously, you want accolades, and you want to be the best, but you don’t get there by worrying about that. You get there by working every day to get better, and that’s what I’m focused on.”

And just what part of his game does he see as needing work? Thomas quickly rattled off what he’s specifically concentrating on.

“Starting with my set in pass protection, just being more consistent with my inside foot, making sure I’m staying on the angle consistently. I would say my hands in pass protection as well, especially the inside hand, making sure I keep leverage on power moves and stuff like that,” he said.

The Giants see Thomas as a building block, a core player, so much so that they excessed his fifth-year option with the likely intent of extending his contract further.

“It’s definitely a blessing. I’m excited. Just working on getting better every day. Good thing I’ll be here,” he said. “And just keep working and getting better every day.”

Thomas will play this season and next for the Giants but the team is in no rush to sit down with him and his reps at this point. But it appears that will happen eventually.

“We haven’t really got into anything yet. If it happens, it happens. Right now, I’m just focusing on the first part of the off-season, and the rest will take care of itself,” he said.

If Thomas continues on his upward trajectory, things certainly will take care of themselves.
