GC Track & Field: Tigers, Lady Tigers finish strong at district meet, send best of the best to Area Meet

Apr. 8—FORNEY — Welcome to the postseason, where it's all about quality.

Corsicana's Tigers and Lady Tigers know all too well that quantity is important but this is the real track & field season and quality means everything.

That's why both the Tiger and Lady Tiger teams celebrated after finishing the District 14-5A Track & Field Meet Friday at Forney with a solid list of athletes who qualified for this week's Area Meet Thursday at Lancaster.

The Lady Tigers were led by Jaz Newsome, and Measha Rhinehart and strong relay teams while the Tigers saw Ja'Shaun Lloyd, a junior who took home second in the 110 hurdles and sixth in the 300 hurdles at the state meet a year ago, dominate the hurdles and run on one of Corsicana's two relay teams that earned trips to Lancaster.

Wayne Braziel's Tigers always produce strong relay teams and the 4x400 team of Keylon Haynes, Andre Ibanez, and twins — Ty'Shaun Lloyd and Ja'Shaun Lloyd — ran a 3:21.41 to finish second at Forney and punch their ticket to Lancaster.

The Tiger 4x100 team of Haynes, Jeremial Taylor, Ty'Shaun Lloyd and Ibanez finished fourth (42.34) to earn a trip to the Area Meet.

Jaz won the girls long jump district title with a leap of 17-feet, and 9.5 inches to set the tone for the Corsicana girls, finishing third in the 400-meters with a time of 59.72. Jaz also anchored the 4x400 relay teams took fourth (4:04.13) and earned a place in the Area Meet.

Marche' Belmontes finished third in the high jump (4-10) and freshman Erika Roughton took fourth (4-8) to reach the Area Meet and both ran on relay teams.
