GC Softball: Kerens LadyCats down Frankston 12-6 to win district opener

Mar. 8—FRANKSTON — The Kerens LadyCats won a huge game Tuesday, beating district rival Frankston 12-6 on the road to win the District 20-2A opener.

It was the fourth win in a row for Kerens and the 301st for Coach Jayson Engel, who celebrated the big 300 earlier and now is off an running toward 400.

Engel's LadyCats turned a nail-biter into a party by shutting down Frankston in the final two innings and erupting for five runs in the sixth and seventh to win the opener 12-6.

It was a 7-6 game after five innings before Kerens took over to start the district race at 1-0 and improve to 16-4 for the season.

There were plenty of big bats everywhere in the Kerens' lineup, including pitcher Rylee Spivey, who went 3-for-5 with a double and a home run, driving in a head-shaking seven runs.

Spivey went the distance, striking out 14 and allowing only two runs to pick up the win and give Kerens a fast start in the district race.

She wasn't alone at the plate, where Olivia Holt went 5-for-5 with a home run, scored and drove in three runs, and where Brooke Sikes went 3-for-4 with a homer and two stolen bases, scoring four times, and where Kayla Gonzales went 3-for-4 with a double, scoring three runs.

Kerens hammered Frankston for 22 hits. Ella Engel went 3-for-5, Sarah Massey went 2-for-5, Jaden Brumit went 2-for-4 and Blair Blue went 1-for-4 and scored two runs.
