GC Girls Soccer: Lady Tigers sail into playoffs with 11-2 romp over Lancaster

Mar. 9—Corsicana's Lady Tigers had already clinched a playoff berth, but they needed to close out the season at home Friday against Lancaster.

No problem.

Andrew Procell's girls threw a season-closing party, running away with an 11-2 romp to close out their regular season.

The Lady Tigers enter the 5A playoffs as a No. 3 seed. This is the second season in a row that Procell's team has reached the postseason. Last year's run to the playoffs ended a 10-year playoff drought for Corsicana's girls soccer program, and the back-to-back berths in the postseason say all you need to know about Procell, who flipped the program upside down in just three seasons.

The girls soccer program is now one of the top athletic programs at CHS as a respected power and playoff team. Every young lady who has played soccer at Corsicana the past three seasons has earned the respect of the entire school and community.

It was a romp Friday.

Senior Sahara Gipson, who has had an incredible four-year career as the leader of the Lady Tigers, took care of business in her final home game, blasting four goals through the Lancaster defense and handing out an assist in the lop-sided victory.

Sophomore Kiana Wilson-Lopez, who was a freshman sensation, has been even better this year. She put a star on top of her second season with an impressive stretch run to the playoffs, scoring seven goals over the last two regular season games.

She raced by Lancaster's defense with ease Friday and drove home three goals in the regular season finale. She's fast with finesse, combining speed and control with a desire and drive that frightens defenses.

Mya Jasso, an ever-improving junior who has stepped up and stepped into the limelight this season, drilled three more goals into the Lancaster net Friday to emphasize how much talented and depth this team processes.

Alexis Valdivia scored a goal and freshman Melanie Jasso (Mya's sister), Elaina Solis and freshman Belen Monje all had assists.
