GameCenter final: UND 6, Alaska 4

Jan. 5—GRAND FORKS — Owen McLaughlin and Riese Gaber each scored twice and had three points to lead UND to a 6-4 win over Alaska in the series opener. Cameron Berg and Louis Jamernik V also scored, while Garrett Pyke had two assists against his old team. Goaltender Hobie Hedquist stopped 23 of 27 shots filling in for an ill Ludvig Persson.

First star: Owen McLaughlin, UND, 2 goals, 3 points.

Second star: Riese Gaber, UND, 2 goals, 3 points.

Third star: Caleb MacDonald, UAF, 2 goals, 3 points.

Alaska 1, UND 0 — Caleb MacDonald 3 (Chase Dubois, T.J. Lloyd) 15:58. Alaska gets on the board first on an excellent play by rookie defenseman Caleb MacDonald. The 6-foot-4 blue liner got the puck at the top of the zone on a rush, dangled UND forward Ben Strinden and picked the top corner of the net. The rush started after UND failed to get a puck deep in the offensive zone.

Alaska 1, UND 1 — Owen McLaughlin 5 (Garrett Pyke, Riese Gaber) 2:50 (pp). UND converts on its second power-play chance of the night quickly off the draw. Gaber poked a puck back to Pyke at the point. He gives it to McLaughlin, who skates to the circle and rips a shot through a Louis Jamernik V screen. It's McLaughlin's fifth goal of the season and second on the power play.

UND 2, Alaska 1 — Riese Gaber 9 (Hunter Johannes) 6:29. Johannes forced a turnover by Nanooks defenseman Broten Sabo. Johannes fights off contact in the right circle and pushes a puck to the bottom of the circle. Alaska's defenders lose track of the puck, Gaber picks it up behind the defense, dangles Nanooks blue liner Dawson Bruneski as he walks across the top of the crease and deposits it with the backhand. It's two goals on the first two shots of the second for the Fighting Hawks.

UND 3, Alaska 1 — Louis Jamernik V 5 (Jayden Perron, Jake Livanavage) 14:58. Livanavage makes a nice play at the blue line to hold a puck in the zone and rim it around the boards. Perron wins the race to it and spots Jamernik cutting down the slot. Jamernik makes a tremendous play to get his stick on the puck at his feet and he tips it perfectly into the top corner of the net.

UND 4, Alaska 1 — Cameron Berg 8 15:45. An Alaska defenseman tries to rim the puck out of the zone, but Berg picks it up along the wall, skates to the middle of the ice and snipes his eighth of the season.

UND 5, Alaska 1 — Owen McLaughlin 6 (Dylan James, Jackson Blake) 17:00. Blake forces a turnover in the offensive zone and carries it to the net, where Charleson makes the initial save. He also stops James' follow-up chance, but McLaughlin puts away the third chance. Charleson is pulled after the goal.

UND 5, Alaska 2 — Payton Matsui 3 (T.J. Lloyd, Caleb MacDonald) 18:29 (dp). The Nanooks score on a delayed penalty at the end of the period when Matsui tips a Lloyd point shot high over Hedquist's glove.

UND 6, Alaska 2 — Riese Gaber 10 (Owen McLaughlin, Garrett Pyke) 7:08 (pp). UND's power play unit gets Gaber a few looks. He misses the net on the first two. Then, he has the puck along the wall, walks it to the circle and fires it through a defender and past backup goalie Lassi Lehti.

UND 6, Alaska 3 — Chase Dafoe 2 (Xavier Jean-Louis) 11:00 (pp). Alaska scores on another deflection — this one with two seconds left on a power play. Jean-Louis launches a shot from the left point to the slot area, where Dafoe tips it past Hedquist.

UND 6, Alaska 4 — Caleb MacDonald 4 (Brady Risk, Anton Rubtsov) 19:35 (ex). The Nanooks pull their goalie and get one more at the end when Risk feeds MacDonald for his fourth of the season.
