GameCenter final: UND 5, Miami 1

Mar. 15—GRAND FORKS — Hobie Hedquist stopped 23 of 24 shots as a late fill-in for Ludvig Persson and UND beat Miami 5-1 in Game 1 of their best-of-three National Collegiate Hockey Conference playoff series. Jake Schmaltz scored his first goal of the season, while Owen McLaughlin, Riese Gaber, Jackson Blake and Jake Livanavage added goals. Blake, McLaughlin, Gaber and Livanavage all had two-point games.

First star: Hobie Hedquist, UND, 23 saves.

Second star: Jake Schmaltz, UND, goal.

Third star: Jackson Blake, UND, goal, 2 points.

UND 1, Miami 0 — Jake Schmaltz 1 (Dylan James, Bennett Zmolek) 19:58. In the waning seconds of the first period, James sends a pass from the defensive blue line to Schmaltz at the offensive blue line. He goes in one-on-three, cuts to the middle on Miami defenseman Dylan Moulton to open a lane, then he fired it high glove on Logan Neaton. It's his first goal in a year and three days, snapping a 33-game goal drought. The last one also came in the NCHC quarterfinals (at Omaha).

UND 2, Miami 0 — Owen McLaughlin 13 (Garrett Pyke, Riese Gaber) 9:23. UND kills back-to-back penalties, then goes down and scores. Defenseman Abram Wiebe launches a point shot that Gaber deflects. The puck takes a long rebound off the end wall and Pyke is crashing the weak side of the crease for a chance. His attempt goes to the other side of the crease, where McLaughlin puts it away.

UND 2, Miami 1 — Ryan Sullivan 5 (Max Dukovac, Thomas Daskas) 10:20. Miami answers in less than a minute as Dukovac wins a puck battle behind the net with three UND defenders there. Nobody is covering Sullivan in the slot. Dukovac flips a pass there and Sullivan buries it.

UND 3, Miami 1 — Riese Gaber 17 (Jake Livanavage, Cameron Berg) 12:13 (pp). UND converts on the power play as Livanavage leaves a pass for Gaber on the right flank and the captain wires a shot through a Jackson Kunz screen for his 17th goal of the season.

UND 4, Miami 1 — Jackson Blake 20 (Jackson Kunz) 1:48. Kunz has the puck at the end wall and sends a pass into the left circle. McLaughlin, knowing Blake is behind him, lets the pass go through. Blake picks it up and scores his 20th goal of the season.

UND 5, Miami 1 — Jake Livanavage 4 (Owen McLaughlin, Jackson Blake) 5:13. Thanks to after-the-whistle penalties, the teams play four-on-four and UND puts on a show. It leads to a passing play from Blake to McLaughlin to Livanavage in space. The rookie defenseman snipes it to put the Fighting Hawks up four goals.
