SANTA CLARA -- The 49ers' offense had its worst night of the season, but Fred Warner wasn’t any happier with the defense’s performance.
“Pissed off,” Warner said. “We’re upset for sure. The fact that we are 0-2 at home, there’s got to be a sense of urgency. Guys got to execute a lot better. I got to look at myself in the mirror and and it starts with me on defense, everybody has got to be better.
"That can’t happen.”
The Eagles arrived in Santa Clara winless and with even more injuries than the 49ers, but Warner said injuries are not an excuse. The 49ers again allowed a quarterback to escape the pocket often, keeping drives alive.
Wentz carried the ball seven times for 37 yards and a touchdown as the Eagles' second-leading rusher. In Week 3, New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones led his team in rushing in their loss to the 49ers with five carries for 49 yards.
This is not the last time that Warner and the defense will see a mobile quarterback. The 49ers still have to face Seattle Seahawks star QB Russell Wilson twice, and Kyler Murray of the Arizona Cardinals a second time.
“There’s little things that we can do differently but it’s for sure something that we talk about throughout the week,” Warner said. “We just got to be better all around, [in] execution. It’s going to take all 11 when teams want to run with the quarterback.”
Warner confirmed that the 49ers will use the 24-hour rule and stew over the loss for one day before moving on to prepare for the Miami Dolphins in Week 5. He added that they have their work cut out for them in the coming week refocussing and improving.
Was there a letdown after two emotional games in New York where the 49ers rallied, playing for their injured brothers? Was there over-confidence after two blowout wins? Warner doesn’t believe there was, but hinted that there might have been a lack discipline at different points in the game.
“I guess you could use that as an excuse if you want, but at the end of the day I think we came back, we had our minds right," he said. "I felt like the energy was right before the game. We had had a great week of practice.
"Guys just need to stay locked in for 60 minutes.”
