Sydir Mitchell is one of the most coveted players in New Jersey, the defensive tackle coming off a Friday visit to Rutgers football for the annual spring game.
Mitchell is a four-star in the 247Sports Composite. The 6-foot-5, 335-pound interior defensive lineman combines tremendous attributes of strength must also athleticism that will allow him to chase down ball carriers well beyond the line of scrimmage. He is the complete package as a defensive tackle.
The Bergen Catholic (Oradell, N.J.) prospect is ranked the fifth-best recruit in New Jersey according to 247Sports. Rivals has him as a four-star and the fourth-best player in New Jersey for the class of 2023 as well as the nation’s No. 15 defensive tackle.
In an interview on Sunday afternoon, Mitchell talked about the programs that likely will be getting an official visit. Mitchell likely won’t take an official visit to Rutgers given his familiarity with the program but he plans on taking an unofficial trip over the summer.
Mitchell is planning to drop his top 10 on Monday. It seems that Rutgers and several other top programs will make the cut.
He hopes to announce his college decision sometime in August.
What did Mitchell think of his visit to Rutgers football for the spring game? How is his relationship with Rutgers head coach Greg Schiano and defensive line coach Marquise Watson? And what four programs are after him the hardest (spoiler alert…he says Rutgers, Georgia, Texas A&M and Auburn)? Are any officials set in stone for Mitchell? Check out Mitchell’s interview for the latest scoop on the four star’s plans!
Mitchell on his visit to Rutgers football for Friday's spring game
“It was really a good visit actually. I mean, I didn’t get to do as much as I wanted, I had to get there late. So I wasn’t there like as early like with the other recruits. I got there right before the game started but it was a good vibe then I got to talk to plenty of the coaches, had a sit down with them. Had the chance to see them in action, you know, get to see them afterward, sit down and talk. It was really good.”
Mitchell on being back at Rutgers
“It’s the first time [since late February]. It was really good because the thing I was really trying to see what the d-tackles were and see how they play with coach Watson and to see how he coaches. But they played really nice and really well.”
Mitchell on his relationship with defensive line coach Marquise Watson
“Yeah, that’s my guy. He’s been my guy since Ole Miss. Like we’ve had this connection for a while; he’s come to school multiple times. We talk a lot too. It’s a great, great relationship that we have.”
Mitchell on where things stand with Rutgers right now
“Rutgers has been doing a good job lately, like contacting me, you know, trying to get me to come to the school whenever they can. They have shown a lot of interest in me – making sure that it seems like I’m a top priority. But it’s been really good.”
Mitchell on Georgia and his relationship with secondary coach Fran Brown
“I would say coach Fran – like I think I was pretty much the first person he called was me when he first got out there. But it was really good because he put a good word in for me, especially in coach [Tray] Scott (defensive line coach), because you know coming from Jersey it is hard, you know? But that coaching staff, I love them too. They all are good people and they have a really good environment there. You know, the coaches, the players, the way they practice.”
Mitchell on potentially visiting Georgia
“May 26, I’m pretty sure that I’ll be taking an official…I’m not exactly sure that’s the exact date but I know it’s going to be around there.”
Mitchell on where things stand with Texas A&M
“Coach Elijah [Robinson] is a really, really good recruiter. There’s something…he keeps it straight up and has from the beginning. He’s not going to try to beat around the busy, you know? He keeps it 100 [percent].”
Mitchell on visiting Texas A&M
“The last week that I’m able to take officials – the last week of June.”
Mitchell on visiting Auburn
“Probably – I haven’t made a date yet but probably will. I’ll probably do that in the summer.”
Mitchell on what he likes about Auburn
“The coaching staff, I really like their coaching staff, their players too as well. They have good d-tackles that I can play with and I feel like I can play on that level if I earn it. They also made me feel like I’m a top priority and it’s about that relationship.”
