Four Colquitt girls drop their state meet times
Nov. 8—MOULTRIE — Four members of the Colquitt County girls cross country team improved their state meet times in the Class 7A state meet held Saturday in Carrollton.
" We had some great runs at the state meet on Saturday," coach Mell Wier said. "We would have liked to have placed higher than 31st, but considering that of the seven girls that ran in this meet, we share six of them with other fall sports/activities, we will take it."
Wier said two of girls who ran in the state meet also play on the flag football team, two are in the color guard and two are on the volleyball team.
"And of the four that ran at state last season, three of them ran significantly faster this year," Wier said.
Senior Yarely Zongua led the team as she has done all season, finishing with a time of 24:02.
Melissa Breedlove ran 25:57; Daniela Malagon ran 26:27; Jaida Gachuz ran 27:09; Vanessa Torres ran 28:06; Jaelyn Wier ran 30:20; and Eidi Gauchz ran a 31:03.
Malagon and Torres also are seniors.
"We are going to miss the leadership of the seniors who ran at state, but hopefully with the four others coming back next season and with some strong eighth-graders set to join the team next year, we should see continued improvement at the state level," Wier said.
