Fort Hill girls tennis beats Southern, boys tie

Mar. 22—CUMBERLAND — Fort Hill defeated Southern, 3-2, in girls tennis and the two schools drew in boys action.

Fort Hill won both of its girls singles matches. Jovie Briefeller swept Allie Newman, 6-0, 6-0, and Aubry Spangler defeated Bella Ross, 6-0, 3-6 (10-2).

Gretchen Porter and Sofia Ottaviani secured a Sentinel win in first doubles, edging Hailey Harvey and Amelia Bolden in a third-set tiebreaker, winning 1-6, 6-3 (10-5).

Southern got on the board by taking the other two doubles matches.

Cadence Natividad and Rylee Iden edged Adaline Carder and Micaela Mattocks, 1-6, 6-3 (10-6); Ava Hunt and Ella Hershfeldt cruised by Ru Earl and Ellie Armstrong, 6-3, 6-0.

In boys action, Fort Hill and Southern split the singles bouts.

Southern's Michael Nazelrod defeated Gunner Wilson, 7-5, 6-3, and Fort Hill's Sam Spencer double-bageled Noah Feguson, 6-0, 6-0.

In doubles, Southern's Ben Nazelrod and Shane Sisler bested Liam Dawson and Tytas Sheetz, 4-7, 6-0 (10-2), and Fort Hill's Josh Eft and Preston Crawford topped Carter Guay and Kolton Michael, 6-2, 6-1.

The match, however, ended in a tie, as the bout between Jaden Wells/Josh Steward of Fort Hill and Andrew SanJulian/Gus Alverez of Southern was called early due to lack of light.

Fort Hill hosts Bishop Walsh on Monday at 4 p.m. Southern is at Allegany at Allegany College of Maryland on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
