Is another head coaching gig not in the cards for Maurice Cheeks?
It doesn’t sound like it is at the moment.
With coach Billy Donovan heading to Chicago to be the head coach of the Bulls, his longtime Oklahoma City Thunder assistant coach Maurice Cheeks is following him to the Windy City.
Cheeks served as an assistant coach for the Thunder for nine seasons under both Scott Brooks and Donovan.
The 64-year-old assistant was thought to be in the running to be the next candidate to succeed Donovan in OKC, but instead, he’ll continue to work alongside him.
The Athletic's Shams Charania was the first to report the coaching news.

It was in 2001, when the Portland Trail Blazers hired Cheeks as their 10th head coach in franchise history. He led the Blazers to two playoff berths in four years at the helm. Following a poor start to the 2004-05 season, he was fired. Cheeks holds an overall record of 162-139 as Portland’s head coach.
But now the Chicago native is heading home.
