Gil Coan, an original member of the 1954 Orioles, passed away Tuesday at the age of 97.

Coan spent the first eight seasons of his MLB career as a member of the Washington Senators before joining the Baltimore Orioles in 1954.

The left fielder recorded the first hit in club history back on April 13, 1954, against the Detroit Tigers.

Coan was named Sporting News Minor League Player of the Year in 1944.

The North Carolina native retired from baseball in 1956 after an 11-year career in the big leagues.
