Former NFL quarterback Erik Kramer arrested after alleged domestic violence incident
Former NFL quarterback Erik Kramer was arrested on Wednesday at his Los Angeles-area home on a domestic violence charge, the Chicago Tribune reported on Friday.
The Tribune reported that Kramer was arrested on “suspicion of corporal injury to a spouse or cohabitant” of his home, however further details of the alleged incident weren’t released. Kramer was released on bond shortly after the arrest, and was “cooperative at the time of the arrest.”
Kramer played in the NFL from 1987-1999 for the Atlanta Falcons, Detroit Lions, Chicago Bears and San Diego Chargers. Kramer led the Bears to a 9-7 season in 1995 — his most successful as a starting quarterback — where he completed more than 60 percent of his passes and threw 29 touchdowns. He also led the Detroit Lions to a playoff victory — its only one since 1957 — during his time with the team from 1990-1993. He compiled a 31-36 record in his 10 year career.
The 53-year-old survived a suicide attempt in 2015 after dealing with suicidal thoughts and mental health issues for more than a decade. Kramer has since received professional health, and told Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press in 2016 that his suicidal thoughts have completely disappeared.
“I don’t want to tempt fate but, at this point, I feel very good,” Kramer told the Detroit Free Press in 2016. “And so my hope is to just keep living life and keep contributing and keep all that going.”
Kramer could not be reached for comment following his arrest.
