Former Jets QB Josh McCown likes Zach Wilson more than Trevor Lawrence

Gang Green has the No. 2 pick, but former Jets quarterback Josh McCown believes New York will get the best passer if the team drafts Zach Wilson.

“I think [Wilson] has a higher ceiling and a better upside than Trevor Lawrence, personally,” McCown told ESPN’s Rich Cimini. “I like him a little better.”

That’s high praise for a player who only had one rockstar season in college, especially when comparing him to a player like Lawrence, who took Clemson to the National Championship in his first two years as a starter and won it all in 2018.

While Wilson did throw for 3,692 yards and 33 touchdowns with just three interceptions in 2020, Lawrence averaged 30 touchdowns and 3,366 yards per season over three years.

McCown clearly sees something better in Wilson than Lawrence. Maybe it’s the improvisation outside the pocket he showed in college, or the rocket arm he displayed at his pro day. Wilson looks great on paper and on tape, but lets’ not discount Lawrence’s 943 yards and 18 touchdowns since 2018, either.

Regardless of what McCown thinks, the Jaguars appear locked in on Lawrence with the No. 1 pick. That leaves the Jets with the choice of either Wilson or Justin Fields – another player with multiple years of collegiate excellence – at No. 2. New York really can’t go wrong with Wilson or Fields, but all reports indicate Wilson will be the pick.
