Former Hampton University assistant Glenwood Ferebee joins Virginia Tech’s revamped staff

Virginia Tech football coach Brent Pry, continuing his bid to make recruiting top players in Hampton Roads and statewide a priority, on Tuesday added a familiar name in the 757 to his staff.

Glenwood Ferebee, a former head coach at Indian River High in Chesapeake and Lakeland High in Suffolk, joined Pry’s new staff as the Hokies’ director of high school relations. Ferebee also is a former offensive coordinator at Hampton University.

Ferebee was 47-17 as Indian River’s coach from 2014-18 and steered the Braves to the state semifinals in 2015 and the region championship game in 2018.

“I’m happy to be back in Virginia and excited about the opportunity presented by Coach Pry,” Ferebee said. “Coach Pry wants to make Virginia a priority and I appreciate his trust in me. Virginia high school football is alive and well. ... I’ve built a lot of meaningful relationships with a multitude of fine coaches during that time. I am excited to hit the ground running in Blacksburg.”

Ferebee left Indian River to coach at Julius Chambers High in Charlotte, North Carolina, going 38-5 over three seasons, reaching three consecutive state title games and winning back-to-back championships in 2019 and 2020.

Ferebee took over at Indian River after serving as an assistant at Hampton University. Before that, he finished 24-29 as Lakeland’s head coach. The Cavaliers were 15-8 in Ferebee’s final two seasons.
