Former Chiefs RB LeSean McCoy talks Julian Edelman’s Hall of Fame candidacy
Former Kansas City Chiefs RB LeSean McCoy weighed in on his own Hall of Fame candidacy, along with that of recently-retired New England Patriots WR Julian Edelman. Speaking to Yahoo Sports’ Jared Quay in the latest episode of The Rush, the 12-year NFL veteran first gave his thoughts on another 12-year vet in Edelman. So does he think that Edelman is a Hall of Fame player?
“Hall of Famer? No, come on, man,” McCoy told Quay.
One of the arguments for Edelman’s Hall of Fame candidacy is that his playoff impact and accolades should help qualify him. For McCoy, he thinks that the regular season stats need to be able to stack up along with the postseason accolades and that they don’t with Edelman.
“I think like that you have 16 weeks to showcase who you are, what you can do each year. The playoffs matter but a lot of guys don’t get a chance to play in the playoffs,” McCoy continued. “I won’t discredit him because I think he’s a great player, plays with a lot of heart, a lot of attitude, a lot of passion. I don’t want to knock on his parade because he’s retiring and he’s a hell of a player, but I don’t know about Hall of Fame.”
Edelman recorded 620 catches for 6,822 yards and 36 receiving touchdowns during his career with the Patriots. He added 118 receptions and over 1,400 yards in the playoffs. He was a three-time Super Bowl champion and Super Bowl MVP in Super Bowl LIII, but he never once made a Pro Bowl or an All-Pro team.
As for McCoy, he seems to think he has a good chance to make the Hall of Fame himself.
“I think I’ve got a good shot at it,” McCoy said. “I put my numbers up with any other running backs. You know, in my decade I was the lead dog. I’ve got good numbers, touchdowns, yards, yards per carry, all those types of things. And you add two Super Bowls to go with it. You never know, we’ll see.”
McCoy has the regular season stats with exactly 15,000 scrimmage yards, six 1,000-yard rushing seasons, 89 total touchdowns. He has the accolades as 2-time All-Pro, 2-time Super Bowl champion, 6-time Pro Bowler, 1-time NFL rushing yards and touchdown leader. He also made the NFL’s 2010s All-Decade Team.
