Former Chiefs LB Willie Gay signs one-year deal with Saints worth $5M

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Reports surfaced on Tuesday that Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Willie Gay signed a one-year contract with the New Orleans Saints worth $5 million.

NFL Network’s Mike Garagolo was the first to report this free agency news and Gay extended his excitement by posting, “LETS DO IT #WHODAT,” on X. In January, Gay tweeted a farewell to Kansas City after the Chiefs beat the Miami Dolphins in the playoffs.

The Chiefs re-signed LB Drue Tranquill, have LB Nick Bolton under contract and have depth with third-year LB Leo Chenal. Gay proved to be faster on the field than his cohorts but finished with fewer tackles in 2023 than all three.

Kansas City drafted Gay in the second round of the 2020 NFL draft out of Mississippi State. In the last two regular seasons, the 26-year-old started 28 of 29 games played and combined for 146 total tackles while collecting two Super Bowl rings in those postseasons.

Along with his play on the field, Gay will be remembered in Kansas City for sparking the Chiefs’ 2023 unofficial anthem “Swag Surfin” and hyping fans during the latest championship parade.
