LOS ANGELES — The last time the Cincinnati Bengals had the first overall pick before drafting Joe Burrow in 2020 was in 2003 with Carson Palmer, and the three-time Pro Bowl quarterback gave Burrow tons of praise for getting the Bengals to the Super Bowl in his second season.

Palmer and Burrow had similar beginnings to their careers other than both being Bengals No. 1 picks, each winning the Heisman Trophy in their final season in college and dealing with ACL injuries in their pro careers. But Palmer said there was more pressure for him coming back from injury because the Bengals had expectations to make the playoffs, whereas this year's team was coming off a 4-11-1 season.

"They weren't very good last year, and Joe got hurt and they got even worse. Nobody expected this," Palmer told USA TODAY Sports. "In September, nobody would sit there and look at that roster and say this team's gonna be Super Bowl."

Palmer said the Bengals' ability to defy expectations began with Burrow, and it can lead them to all the way to a Super Bowl victory.

"A lot of that magic is Joe that's rubbing off on the guys around them, and I think they might have just enough magic to get to get one," he said.

Former Bengals quarterback Carson Palmer finally opened up about his departure from team.

The former quarterback said Burrow doesn't have the skills or size of Patrick Mahomes and Justin Herbert, but he just "finds a way to get it there." Palmer noted Burrow's ability to stay calm has played a huge role, specifically when he was sacked nine times by the Tennessee Titans in the AFC divisional round. So if he had to pick any AFC quarterback to start a franchise with, Palmer would choose Burrow.

"He got the Bengals here. He got this roster here," he said. "I just think he has multiple Super Bowls in the future."

And for all of the praise Burrow receives for his play, Palmer loves what he sees off-the field just as much, whether it's the turtleneck, glasses, diamonds or gold chain.

"It's refreshing to see a guy comfortable in his own skin, and if he thinks it looks good, he doesn't care what anybody else thinks," Palmer said. "I actually can't wait to see what he's wearing on Sunday and can't wait to see hopefully in a winning press conference after the game."
