Former ASU RB Chip Trayanum headed home to Ohio State

Arizona State sophomore running back DeaMonte "Chip" Trayanum is headed home.

The 5-foot-11, 235-pounder, who entered the transfer portal earlier this month, publicized on social media Saturday that he will next play for the Ohio State Buckeyes. His post indicated he will be playing on defense.

Trayanum is a native of Akron and excelled at Archbishop Hoban High School. He was a four-star prospect by all the recruiting services when he signed with ASU two year years ago.

He played in nine games and had 78 carries for 402 yards and six touchdowns this season for the Sun Devils after his playing time diminished considerably late in the season. He had 60 carries in the first five games, with a high of 19 coming in the Sun Devils loss to Washington State but had only 18 carries in the four games after that. He did lose a fumble in the Washington State game, then had another in the USC game.

Asked about the lack of carries Trayanum got seemingly right after those fumbles, the ASU staff said it had more to do with going with the hot hand in White, the most experienced and productive back.

Trayanum's departure and the decision by Rachaad White to sit out the Las Vegas Bowl in preparation for the NFL draft leaves ASU thin in the backfield. The lone scholarship back remaining is sophomore Daniyel Ngata who had just 45 carries for 286 yards with his playing time limited by the presence of the other two.
