Florida inches up Basketball Power Index after big SEC road win

Todd Golden’s Florida Gators were in dire need of a win on Saturday night against the Missouri Tigers. His team left with its first true road win of the season while showing a great amount of grit in a bounceback 79-67 effort in Columbia, Missouri.

In ESPN’s latest Basketball Power Index update following the win, Florida moved up two spots from our last update to No. 33 overall, now sitting between the No. 32 Clemson Tigers and No. 34 Mississippi State Bulldogs.

Florida’s BPI rating — a measurement of a team’s true strength moving forward — rose 0.6 points to 10.2. The offensive BPI moved up 0.3 points to 7.1 and the defensive BPI also rose 0.3 points to 3.1.

The win-loss projection also improved to 19.5-11.5, with a much better 9.5-8.5 prediction for the conference schedule. ESPN only gives Florida a 0.1% chance to win the Southeastern Conference while the remaining strength of schedule ranks at No. 46.

Florida returns home to face the Mississippi State Bulldogs inside the O’Connell Center on Wednesday, Jan. 24. Tipoff time is slated for another late start, this time at 8:30 p.m. ET, and the game will be broadcast on the SEC Network.
