Another Florida football player is facing legal trouble.
A police report alleges that Edwards grabbed his girlfriend by the neck to keep her from leaving his apartment during an argument. According to the incident report, the victim had marks on her neck and a scratch on her shoulder. A witness attempted to intervene and called 911, police said.
Edwards, a junior, played in 18 games over the past two seasons for the Gators. He had seven tackles, four pass breakups and a fumble recovery in 2018.
Edwards is the second UF player to make off-the-field headlines in the last week. It was revealed last week that quarterback Jalon Jones was accused of sexual battery by two different women in April. Jones, who intends to transfer, was not charged with any crimes.
Two weeks earlier, UF recruiting staffer Otis Yelverton was arrested for stalking. Yelverton, hired by Dan Mullen as the Gators’ assistant director of player personnel, was accused of harassing a woman he was previously dating. According to a police report, Yelverton made calls and sent the woman texts and Facebook messages. In an April 21 voicemail message, Yelverton threatened to “blow up” the woman’s car.
Yelverton was placed on leave by the university.
