Florida basketball among transfer portal winners in 2023
The college basketball transfer portal slammed shut on Friday, ending a 60-day window in which over 1,700 student-athletes submitted their names in search of greener pastures. With the ending of the sport’s de facto free agency period, On3’s national basketball recruiting analyst Jamie Shaw took a look at the biggest winners and losers of the 2023 transfer portal cycle, including Todd Golden’s Gators.
The Orange and Blue were among eight winning programs in the portal, along with the Georgia Bulldogs (where former UF coach Mike White now resides), LSU Tigers, Kansas Jayhawks, West Virginia Mountaineers, Arkansas Razorbacks, Texas Longhorns and UC Santa Barbara Gauchos.
Florida has signed a total of four transfers in Iona point guard Walter Clayton Jr., Marshall center Micah Handlogten, Yale power forward EJ Jarvis and Seton Hall forward Tyrese Samuel. This foursome joins a quartet of returning players, headlined by starters Riley Kugel and Will Richard, while also including 2023 signees Alex Condon and Thomas Haugh.
The Gators have the 10th-ranked class in the On3 team transfer portal team rankings with one of the nation’s highest average player ratings at 91.50. They are one of seven teams with a pair of top-40 transfers — a list that also includes the Houston Cougars, Iowa State Cyclones, Arkansas, LSU, Kansas and West Virginia.
