It’s the final week of the season and best of luck whether you are competing in the finals of your head-to-head league or in a roto-league.

It has been the longest regular season in the NHL as there were 28 weeks this season.

Hopefully next season will get back to normal with an early October start as well as an early April ending.

I want to thank everyone once again at NBC Sports Edge including Ryan Dadoun, Corey Abbott, Jeff Alfieri, Mark Lindquist and Matt Ohayon, as well as Gus Katsaros and the fine crew at McKeens Hockey. Thanks for all your help earlier this season to Joey Alfieri and Anna Dua and best of luck on your future careers.

Thanks go out to Ed Williams, Aaron Solomon, Mike Murphy, Chris Wilson, everyone on the desk including Julian, Theodore, Andrew, Philip and anyone else on the desk I may have missed.

As well, thanks as always to Jungkyu Lee for all his technical help all season long as well as his staff.

Notes

The Ducks started the season off well but faded after the All-Star break...Their future is bright with players like Trevor Zegras, Jamie Drysdale and Troy Terry among others...Ryan Getzlaf will have played his last game in the NHL by the start of the week as he will not go on the road to finish the season with the Ducks...Max Jones will not play the rest of the way despite declaring himself ready to play...Jones suffered a torn chest muscle in October and never played again the remainder of the season...John Gibson has only won once since March 1....Terry leads the Ducks with 26 goals and 64 points...Look for Drysdale to take on a bigger role next season.

ARIZONA

Games this week

@ Minnesota, @ Dallas, vs. Nashville

Tired: None

Rested: vs. Nashville (Friday)

Notes

The Coyotes play three games in four nights...Karel Vejmelka should get a pair of starts with Harri Sateri playing once...The Coyotes GM Bill Armstrong said on Wednesday that Jakob Chychrun would not return this season...He was injured on Mar. 12 and while the initial prognosis was two-four weeks, he never returned...He is worth looking at next season as he led all defensemen last season in goals with 18...Clayton Keller will lead the team in goals and points with 28 and 63 respectively but has not played since Mar. 30 when he suffered a fractured leg that required surgery...Nick Schmaltz had an awesome season with 54 points in 58 games and should be a big piece on next year’s team.

BOSTON

Games this week

vs. Florida, vs. Buffalo, @ Toronto

Tired: @ Toronto (Friday)

Rested: None

Notes

The Bruins could get David Pastrnak (undisclosed) and Hampus Lindholm (lower body) back this week, if not sooner...Both have been out for over two weeks...Linus Ullmark is also expected to return from his upper-body injury...It has been a weird year for the Bruins as they sit in fourth in the Atlantic and will likely cross over to play the winner of the Metropolitan in the opening round...Their goaltending situation was in flux earlier when Tuukka Rask returned in the middle of the season but only played in four games before retiring...That allowed Jeremy Swayman to return from the minors and he has been the Bruins best goalie overall but could cede the net to Ullmark once the playoffs begin...Brad Marchand leads Boston with 73 points while Pastrnak has a team-leading 38 goals.

BUFFALO

Games this week

@ Boston, vs. Chicago

Tired: vs. Chicago (Friday)

Rested: None

Notes

The Sabres defeated New Jersey on Thursday 5-2 and congratulations go out to Owen Power, the first overall pick who scored his first NHL goal...The defenseman will be a great one and the Sabres future is bright with both Power and Rasmus Dahlin on the blueline...It has been a great comeback season for Dahlin who has 12 goals and 52 points after a poor 2020-21 campaign...The Sabres have lots of youth up front as well as Tage Thompson had a breakthrough year with 36 goals and 65 points to lead Buffalo, while Victor Olofsson has finally shaken off his injury woes from earlier in the season and has 20 goals and 47 points, including eight goals and 17 points in his last 13 games...Don’t forget about him next season.

CALGARY

Games this week

@ Nashville, @ Minnesota, @ Winnipeg

Rested: None

Notes

The Flames play three games in four nights...Look for Jacob Markstrom to play twice with Dan Vladar playing once...It has been a fabulous season for the Flames big three of Johnny Gaudreau, Matthew Tkachuk and Elias Lindholm who have combined for 117 goals and 287 points as well as a plus-169...They are one-two-three in plus/minus with Gaudreau leading at plus-60 with Tkachuk at plus-56...Just to show you how rare a plus-60 is, the last player to do so was Vladimir Konstantinov in 1995-96 and before that, you have to go back to the 1986-87 season when Wayne Gretzky was a plus-69...Throw in Andrew Mangiapane’s 35 goals and it has been a special season in Calgary...Jacob Markstrom has been great all season as well as he is 37-15-8 with a 2.21 GAA and a .922 save percentage with nine shutouts, although his last one was back on Mar. 12 against Detroit.

CAROLINA

Games this week

@ New York Rangers, vs. New Jersey

Tired: None

Rested: None

Notes

The Hurricanes are battling the New York Rangers for first place and that makes Tuesday’s tilt at Madison Square Garden so important as the two teams are tied at 108 points apiece...As usual, Sebastian Aho has been the Hurricanes leading scorer as he has 36 goals and 78 points, four goals and 10 points better than Andrei Svechnikov...The Hurricanes got a big season from Tony DeAngelo as the former Ranger was an offensive star from the blueline...Carolina came into the season with a pair of new goaltenders, signing Frederik Andersen and Antti Raanta as free agents...The moves paid off as Andersen solidified the net with a 35-14-3 mark to go with a 2.17 GAA and a .922 save percentage while Raanta was an outstanding backup, going 14-5-4 with a 2.44 GAA and a .912 save percentage.

CHICAGO

Games this week

vs. Philadelphia, vs. Vegas, @ Buffalo

Tired: None

Rested: vs. Vegas (Wednesday), @ Buffalo (Friday)

Notes

The Blackhawks had a tough season as it was thought they would be playoff contenders and they were anything but...The Blackhawks sunk to seventh in the Central and 27th overall in the NHL with 63 points...It has been another great season for Patrick Kane who has 91 points, good for a tie for 11th with Mikko Rantanen with a week left in the season...Alex DeBrincat hit the 40-goal mark for the second time in his young career while Dylan Strome took off in the middle of the season and showed that he was an important part of the Blackhawks rebuild...They have a big problem in net with Kevin Lankinen and Collin Delia the top two goalies at this time, since the trading of Marc-Andre Fleury to Minnesota...Seth Jones had a nice season with in his first year with Chicago as he has five goals and 50 points in 74 games.

COLORADO

Games this week

vs. St. Louis, vs. Nashville, @ Minnesota

Tired: None

Rested: None

Notes

The Avalanche play three games in four nights this week...Darcy Kuemper should get two starts with Pavel Francouz playing once...The Avalanche have to be considered the favorites for the Stanley Cup as they have 116 points entering Friday’s action...There is so much talent on this team, including their top line of Nathan MacKinnon, Mikko Rantanen and the injured Gabriel Landeskog who hopes to be back for the start of the playoffs...Nazem Kadri has had a career year and their blueline could be the best in the NHL with Cale Makar, Devon Toews and Samuel Girard leading the way...Rantanen leads the team in goals with 36 and points with 91 but the best seasons have been by MacKinnon who has 31 goals and 85 points in just 61 games while Makar leads all blueliners with 27 goals and is second to Roman Josi with 84 points.

COLUMBUS

Games this week

@ Tampa Bay, vs. Tampa Bay, @ Pittsburgh

Tired: @ Pittsburgh (Friday)

Rested: None

Notes

The Blue Jackets play three games in four nights including a home-and-home series against Tampa Bay...Expect to see Elvis Merzlikins play twice and Jean-Francois Berube once...Merzlikins has played well enough that he will enter next season as the undisputed number one goalie...Jakub Voracek is tied for the Blue Jackets lead in points with 56 but has scored only five times this season...Patrik Laine also has 56 points but has done it in 56 games, 18 fewer than Voracek...The Blue Jackets have a lot to look forward to with youngsters like Cole Sillinger, Laine, Oliver Bjorkstrand as well as blueliners Adam Boqvist and Jake Bean.

DALLAS

Games this week

vs. Vegas, vs. Arizona, vs. Anaheim

Tired: None

Rested: None

Notes

The Stars play three games in four nights...Look for Jake Oettinger to play twice with Scott Wedgewood playing once...It will be a big week for the Stars who are currently hanging onto the second wild card, only two points up on Vegas with four games remaining as they host the Golden Knights on Tuesday...Dallas has to outright beat Vegas in the standings as Vegas holds the tie-breaker...Jason Robertson showed no signs of a sophomore slump as he has 38 goals and 73 points this season, second-best on the Stars to Joe Pavelski who has 77...Roope Hintz has 35 goals and 68 points in 76 games, more impressive when you take into account that he had only one assist in his first 10 games...It was not a great season for Miro Heiskanen but let’s hope that it was the mononucleosis that hurt his season and that he will be able to come back next season.

DETROIT

Games this week

@ Toronto, @ New Jersey

Tired: None

Rested: @ New Jersey (Friday)

Notes

The Red Wings took a big step forward this season as rookies Lucas Raymond (fourth overall in 2020) and Moritz Seider (sixth overall in 2019) made their NHL debuts and both were successful as Seider should win the Calder as the defenseman has taken over as the top blueliner on Detroit as he played most of the season as a 20-year-old but looked like a seasoned veteran...Raymond showed amazing skills and has 23 goals and 56 points...I think they solved their goaltending woes with the off-season acquisition of Alex Nedeljkovic who looked outstanding at times in the Detroit cage...Tyler Bertuzzi returned to form after playing only nine games last season as he had 28 goals and 57 points despite being the only player in the NHL not to be able to play in Canada due to being non-vacccinated.

EDMONTON

Games this week

@ Pittsburgh, vs. San Jose, vs. Vancouver

Tired: None

Rested: None

Notes

The Oilers play three games in four nights so look for Mike Smith to play twice with Mikko Koskinen playing once...Connor McDavid had a goal and two assists Wednesday to take over the NHL scoring lead but was tied again on Thursday by Jonathan Huberdeau...He has 113 points this season...The Oilers have been hot of late and look to be good enough to finish second in the Pacific...The Oilers could be the surprise team in the Pacific, especially if Smith continues to play like he has of late as he has won seven straight and given up only six goals on 202 shots in his last six games...Leon Draisaitl has 54 goals this season, one of only four players to hit the 50-goal mark thus far...Evander Kane has been a welcome addition as he has 17 goals and 32 points in 38 games with a career-best plus-21 rating.

FLORIDA

Games this week

@ Boston, @ Ottawa, @ Montreal

Tired: @ Montreal (Friday)

Rested: None

Notes

The Panthers play three games in four nights...Sergei Bobrovsky and Spencer Knight will each get one start with the third depending on whether or not Bobrovsky needs the extra work...Jonathan Huberdeau has eight points in his last four games and is tied with Connor McDavid for the NHL scoring lead with 113 points as he is definitely having a career year...The Panthers have won 12 in a row and have 118 points with five games remaining...So many Panthers are having career years, including Sam Reinhart, Aaron Ekblad (before he was hurt), Anthony Duclair, Carter Verhaeghe and Mason Marchment...Sergei Bobrovsky had a huge bounce-back season after a couple of bad ones in his first two years with Florida as he is 38-6-3 with a 2.64 GAA and a .913 save percentage...The Panthers are the favorites to come out of the Eastern Conference for the Stanley Cup so, if you can, take as many Panthers as possible in your playoff pools.

LOS ANGELES

Games this week

@ Seattle, @ Vancouver

Tired: @ Vancouver (Thursday)

Rested: @ Seattle (Wednesday)

Notes

The Kings have won three straight and look to be shoo-ins to finish third in the Pacific this season...Their future is bright as they have the best farm system in the NHL but this season still relied on veterans Anze Kopitar, Drew Doughty (when healthy) and Jonathan Quick for their leadership...While Kopitar led the Kings in points yet again (the 15th time in the last 16 years he has led the Kings) with 64, Adrian Kempe led the way in goals with 34...The acquisition of Phillip Danault has been a great one for the Kings as he took over centering the second line as has 26 goals and 50 points this season...Sean Durzi has had a strong rookie season with three goals and 27 points in 61 games and took over the power play from the injured Doughty.

MINNESOTA

Games this week

vs. Arizona, vs. Calgary, vs. Colorado

Tired: None

Rested: None

Notes

The Wild play three games in four nights...Cam Talbot and Marc-Andre Fleury are sharing the net and this week Talbot should get two starts with Fleury seeing the crease once if they keep the same rotation...It has been a great campaign for Kirill Kaprizov who took his Calder Trophy winning season of last year and improved immensely as he has 44 goals and 97 points with five games left in the season...Mats Zuccarello and Kevin Fiala also have had career years as Zuccarello has 78 points in 69 games while Fiala has 77 points in 77 games...Ryan Hartman has been a star for Minnesota with 32 goals and 61 points as he is having his best season...Matthew Boldy is having a great rookie season with 15 goals and 36 points in 42 games.

MONTREAL

Games this week

@ New York Rangers, vs. Florida

Tired: None

Rested: @ New York Rangers (Wednesday), vs. Florida (Friday)

Notes

The Canadiens will finally put this season behind them as they dropped to the bottom of the Eastern Conference after going to the Stanley Cup Final last season...The good news of late is that Carey Price finally returned to action after missing all season recovering from off-season knee surgery...Cole Caufield took a big step (or skate) once the Habs let Dominque Ducharme go as head coach and replaced him with Martin St. Louis as he regained his offensive flair...He looks to be a star and should team well with fellow youngster Nick Suzuki for the Canadiens in the years to come.

NASHVILLE

Games this week

vs. Calgary, @ Colorado, @ Arizona

Tired: @ Arizona (Friday)

Rested: None

Notes

The Predators play three games in four nights and it is possible that Juuse Saros plays in all three games if Nashville is in any danger of missing the playoffs...If Nashville has clinched a spot, David Rittich will play once...They have 93 points and while they are in the first wild card position, they could be caught...Congratulations go out to Matt Duchene who scored his 40th of the season Thursday, the first time in his career...Roman Josi has only a goal and an assist in his last seven games, so he needs 11 points in his last five games to hit the 100-point mark...Still, his 89 points are an all-time best for a Nashville Predator and Josi is likely this season’s Norris Trophy winner.

NEW JERSEY

Games this week

@ Ottawa, @ Carolina, vs. Detroit

Tired: vs. Detroit (Friday)

Rested: None

Notes

The Devils play three games in four nights...Nico Daws should get two starts with Jon Gillies playing once...Jack Hughes was finally showing the rest of the NHL why he was a first overall pick in 2019 as he had 26 goals and 56 points in 49 games but injuries took their toll on him this season...Look for him to be a star next season...The Devils got themselves a good one in Jesper Bratt as he took a leap forward this season with 25 goals and 70 points in 72 games and Yegor Sharangovich established himself as an NHLer with 22 goals and 43 points...Ty Smith was a disappointment this season after finishing last season as a first-team defenseman on the rookie squad...The Devils were doomed when both their goalies, Mackenzie Blackwood and Jonathan Bernier went down in the opening half of the season.

NEW YORK ISLANDERS

Games this week

@ Washington, vs. Washington, vs. Tampa Bay

Tired: None

Rested: None

Notes

The Islanders play three games in four nights...Ilya Sorokin should play twice with Semyon Varlamov playing once...Varlamov returned to action on Thursday after missing almost two weeks with a stomach ailment and it showed has he gave up six goals on 23 shots against the Rangers...It has been a poor season for the Islanders as most picked them to make the playoffs (I had them winning the division after going to the Stanley Cup semi-finals two years in a row) and they managed to miss the post-season...Sorokin has proven himself to be a solid number one goaltender...Brock Nelson has been a great goal scorer this season with 36 markers in 68 games...Mathew Barzal has disappointed with only 53 points in 68 games but Noah Dobson has come into his own with 11 goals and 45 points as the defenseman had taken over as their top blueliner.

NEW YORK RANGERS

Games this week

vs. Carolina, vs. Montreal, vs. Washington

Tired: vs. Montreal (Wednesday)

Rested: vs. Washington (Friday)

Notes

The Rangers see action in three games this week over four nights...Igor Shesterkin should get the call twice with Alexandar Georgiev playing once...New York has come out of nowhere to tie the Carolina Hurricanes for top spot in the Metropolitan and play an all-important game on Tuesday at home versus Carolina...It has been a great season for Chris Kreider who has 51 goals after never scoring as much as 30 in any previous NHL season...He has a league-leading 26 goals on the power play and has teamed with Mika Zibanejad to score 40 of the Rangers 53 power play markers....Artemi Panarin continues to shine with 96 points this season while Andrew Copp has been sensational since his trade at the deadline with eight goals and 18 points in 15 games...But the real star of the team is Shesterkin as he carried the Rangers on his back in the first five months of the season...He should win the Vezina.

OTTAWA

Games this week

vs. New Jersey, vs. Florida, @ Philadelphia

Tired: @ Philadelphia (Friday)

Rested: None

Notes

The Senators play three games this week in four nights...Anton Forsberg should get the call twice with Filip Gustavsson playing once...The Senators also made a big leap forward this season as they were led by youngsters Brady Tkachuk, Tim Stutzle, Josh Norris and Drake Batherson up front...Tkachuk leads with 60 points while Norris is tops with 33 goals...Stutzle has been on fire lately with points in nine of his last 10 games as he has six goals and 14 points in the streak...Batherson has played only 41 games but has 40 points...Thomas Chabot is the leader of the blueline corps and saw his season interrupted on Mar. 16 when he fractured his hand but he has been skating and could return before the end of the season this week.

PHILADELPHIA

Games this week

@ Chicago, @ Winnipeg, vs. Ottawa

Tired: None

Rested: vs. Ottawa (Friday)

Notes

The Flyers have been a big disappointment this season as they have sunk to the bottom of the standings in the Metropolitan and are 28th in the NHL, only one point better than the expansion Seattle Kraken who have two games in hand...They dealt long-time Flyer great Claude Giroux at the deadline and the loss of Sean Couturier after only 29 games hurt, but even if he had been healthy all year, the Flyers were not going anywhere...Philadelphia has Cam Atkinson and Travis Konecny leading the team with a paltry 50 points apiece while Atkinson and James van Riemsdyk lead with 23 goals...Ivan Provorov was supposed to be their stud defenseman but it seems that every season of late, he has taken another step back...Keith Yandle is a league-worst minus-44...There is not a lot to like in this edition of the Flyers and it appears a lengthy rebuild is in order.

PITTSBURGH

Games this week

vs. Edmonton, vs. Columbus

Tired: None

Rested: vs. Columbus (Friday)

Notes

The Penguins are in a fight for third place with Washington as the Capitals are two points back with a game in hand...Sidney Crosby and Jake Guentzel are tied for the scoring lead among Penguins as each have 81 points...Bryan Rust has had a fine season with 58 points in just 56 contests...Tristan Jarry is week-to-week with a lower body injury and is questionable for the first round of the playoffs at this time...Casey DeSmith took over the net Thursday and was sensational in stopping all 52 Boston shots in a 4-0 victory...Louis Domingue is up with the big squad after he was recalled with the injury to Jarry...Jeff Carter left Thursday’s game with a lower-body injury and is day-to-day.

SAN JOSE

Games this week

vs. Anaheim, @ Edmonton, @ Seattle

Tired: @ Seattle (Friday)

Notes

The Sharks have had yet another disappointing campaign as they are out of the post-season...They have a good one-two punch with Timo Meier and the recently extended Tomas Hertl...They are getting long in the teeth with Brent Burns and Erik Karlsson and were getting old in net with James Reimer before they dealt for Kaapo Kahkonen...Meier leads the Sharks with 33 goals and 73 points with Hertl at 62 points...The Sharks signed Strauss Mann to a one-year contract after he spent three seasons at the University of Michigan and this season with Stelleftea AIK of the Swedish Hockey League...Kevin Labanc had an injury-filled season. Playing only 21 games and none after Dec. 11.

SEATTLE

Tired: vs. Los Angeles (Wednesday)

Rested: vs. San Jose (Friday)

Notes

The Kraken play four games this week (the only team in the NHL to do so), including three games in four nights...Philipp Grubauer should get three starts with Chris Driedger getting one start...The Kraken were expecting great goaltending from their duo but they have been mediocre at best with GAA’s of 3.05 for Driedger and 3.09 for Grubauer...Both had save percentages of under .900 and were fantasy duds if you selected either or both in your pool...Matthew Beniers has given the Kraken a glimpse of their future as he has two goals and four points since signing out of the University of Michigan...Jared McCann has been the Kraken’s top scorer this season with 26 goals and 45 points, one point better than Yanni Gourde.

The Maple Leafs got whomped on Thursday against their probable first round opponent, the Tampa Bay Lightning, to the tune of 8-1 but were missing Auston Matthews, Jake Muzzin and Jack Campbell from the lineup...Matthews has missed the last three games with an undisclosed injury but is getting close as he has been skating...Matthews has a career-high 58 goals and 102 points in 70 games while teammate Mitch Marner has 34 goals and 95 points in 69 games...The remaining two of the big four, William Nylander and John Tavares have 76 and 75 points respectively...Michael Bunting leads all rookies with 63 points as the Maple Leafs have been an offensive machine this season...They need top-notch goaltending from Campbell if they are to beat Tampa Bay in the opening round of the playoffs, even with home ice advantage.

VANCOUVER

Games this week

vs. Seattle, vs. Los Angeles, @ Edmonton

Rested: vs. Los Angeles (Thursday)

Notes

The Canucks play three games in four nights...Thatcher Demko should get all three starts if the Canucks have even a sliver of a chance to make the playoffs, otherwise Jaroslav Halak will get one start...With only four games remaining heading into action on Friday, it looks like the Canucks are doomed as they have managed only one point in their last two games after reeling off six straight wins to get back in the playoff picture...It has been a year to remember for J.T. Miller who has 30 goals and 93 points, smashing his previous best marks of 27 goals and 72 points set two seasons ago...Elias Pettersson has regained his form as he has 13 goals and 20 points in his last 12 games, giving him 31 goals and 65 points this season, one point off his career high of 66 points set in each of his first two seasons.

VEGAS

@ Dallas, @ Chicago, @ St. Louis

Tired: @ Chicago (Wednesday)

Rested: None

Notes

The Golden Knights play three games in four nights this week as they still attempt to make the post-season...Robin Lehner could get two starts with Logan Thompson playing once...The Golden Knights are making it awfully on themselves to garner a playoff spot as they are 3-3-1 in their last seven and trail Dallas by two points with four games remaining, but do not hold the tie-breaker at this time...Jonathan Marchessault tops the team in goals and points with 29 and 64...Chandler Stephenson has been one of the Golden Knights pleasant surprises as he has 59 points including 40 assists...Not bad for a waiver claim from 2019...The tough part for the Golden Knights have been the injuries, especially to Max Pacioretty and Mark Stone...The trade for Jack Eichel will prove beneficial next season but at a cost as they have no real prospects on the horizon.

WASHINGTON

Notes

The Jets have had a bad season as they were expecting to make the playoffs but will fall far short of the mark...They did get an outstanding season from Kyle Connor who has 44 goals and 88 points this year and Pierre-Luc Dubois was a strong player all year but an off-season from Connor Hellebuyck in goal really hurt their cause...Hellebuyck was a top-five goaltender in the NHL heading into the season but his 27-27-10 mark to go with a 3.03 GAA and a .909 save percentage, made him a top 15-20 goalie this season...Mark Scheifele has 70 points but has not played in almost two weeks with an upper-body injury that is believed to be a shoulder injury.
