Felipe Alou talks about baseball from the '50s and the '90s on 'Old Baseball Cards'
Felipe Alou is baseball royalty. He was the second player from the Dominican Republic to play in Major League Baseball and the first to play regularly. His brothers Matty and Jesus followed not long after, and the Alou brothers made history playing together in the outfield for the San Francisco Giants in 1963.
After a 17-year playing career, Felipe turned to managing. He was the skipper of the Montreal Expos for 10 years and the Giants for another four. He’s also the father of former MLB All-Star Moises Alou, who played for the Expos while his dad was the manager. These days, at 82, Felipe is a special assistant to the GM for the Giants. For our “Old Baseball Cards” series, Alou presented a rare and wonderful opportunity: He could talk about baseball in the ’50s, when he began playing in the big leagues, and in the ’90s, when he was managing the Expos. So we opened 1954 Topps and 1994 Topps Stadium Club, both allowing Alou an opportunity to share stories and memories. That’s a 40-year gap, but he was able to talk about both Phil Rizzuto and Ken Griffey Jr. as someone who watched them up close.
If you’re new to this series, we open packs of old baseball cards with baseball players, managers and famous fans. Most of the cards aren’t worth much — especially the stuff from the ’80s and ’90s — but we use them to get nostalgia out of baseball people. We’ve got plenty of great episodes below to check out.
