FC Schalke 04 buys European League of Legends team

German soccer club FC Schalke 04 has purchased a spot in the European LCS, the team announced Monday. They will be taking over the spot previously held by Elements.

While this isn’t the first time that a soccer club has entered the esports space (Turkish club Beşiktaş JK owned a team for a period), this will be the first time that one owns a team in one of the premier League of Legends leagues.

The team will be retaining four of the previous Elements players, holding onto top laner Etienne “Steve” Michels, jungler Berk “Gilius” Demir, AD carry Rasmus “MrRalleZ” Skinneholm and support Hampus “sprattel” Abrahamsson. Rounding out the mid lane slot will be former Unicorn of Love Hampus “Fox” Myhre.

With the purchase, FC Schalke 04 has become the biggest sports organization to enter the League of Legends esports space. While other traditional sports names have invested in teams - Shaquille O’Neal and Rick Fox, for example - FC Schalke 04 will be the biggest to lend their name to a League of Legends team.
