That's right, you can drop Gerald Laird(notes), Carlos Ruiz(notes), Chris Snyder(notes), or whoever you've been using as a placeholder for Matt Wieters(notes). The Orioles are calling up baseball's top prospect on Friday. This from the Baltimore Sun:
Orioles president of baseball operations Andy MacPhail dropped a surprise on Orioles fans during the MASN broadcast a few minutes ago, announcing that top prospect Matt Wieters will be recalled and make his major league debut on Friday against the Detroit Tigers at Camden Yards.
"It's time,'' MacPhail said. "He's ready."
The switch-hitting Wieters was named Baseball America's Minor League Player of the Year in 2008, after hitting .355/.454/.600 with 27 home runs across two levels. It's said that he does not know pain or fear and he does not require sleep. At age 11, he was recruited by the Molina family, but he turned 'em down cold. He's that good. And he totally woulda drilled that shot over Hedo Turkoglu.
You can't add Wieters in any competitive league, but you can covet. On Friday, some of us can finally start him.
If I were at all objective about this call-up, I'd say that this is an excellent time to shop Wieters. He could very well be an elite fantasy catcher over the final four months of the season; he should also have fantastic short-term trade value.
Let's put it to a vote...
