Jay Ajayi gets fantasy boost after trade from Dolphins to Eagles

The NFL trade deadline has been way more active this year. Things kicked off Monday night with the New New England Patriots shipping Jimmy Garoppolo to the San Francisco 49ers. Tuesday an even bigger trade when it comes to Fantasy Football implications went down, with the Philadelphia Eagles acquiring Jay Ajayi from the Miami Dolphins.

Here is the immediate take on some of our experts on the Ajayi impact. We also have a recap of the other big moves at the trade deadline.

Brad Evans: Ajayi to Philadelphia certifies this year’s deadline the most active and most fantasy impactful in NFL history. Nuts. His arrival, and expected supplanting of LeGarrette Blount, to a viable Super Bowl contender greatly boosts his virtual worth.

For starters, the Eagles’ banged up offensive line, which ranks top-10 according to several advanced metric sites in run-blocking efficiency, is a substantial upgrade over Miami’s. Secondly, the offensive environment, as a whole, is more nourishing. Carson Wentz’s transformation in Year 2 should help alleviate stacked fronts, which the rusher saw with the Dolphins at a 26.81 percent clip. Additionally, Philly’s favorable fantasy playoff schedule (at LAR, at NYG, Oak) suggests the much-maligned RB could morph into a statistical hero, erasing his string of inept performances from earlier this year.

Though he failed to record a TD this season on South Beach, his 2.77 YAC/attempt and tape clearly show he still possesses the power and burst to inflict serious damage. At a minimum, he should finish inside the position’s top-15 rest of season.

Meanwhile in Miami, mediocre talents Damien Williams and Kenyan Drake should form a committee of unknown distribution. Neither is RB2 worthy, particularly behind Miami’s dreadful offensive line, but in deeper leagues where waiver options are limited, both are viable FLEX candidates, especially with three more weeks of byes. Anticipate Williams to garner roughly 12-14 touches this week against Oakland. – Brad Evans
