‘Most loving person.’ Family asks for help after NC mom fatally shot holding her toddler
Sharelle “Pebbles” Johnson “was the most loving, compassionate person,” her older sister, Nynita Johnson, told The Charlotte Observer Saturday night.
“She loved her siblings and her children with everything in her soul,” Nynita Johnson said.
Sharelle Johnson was a 25-year-old nurse-in-training who moved to Greensboro from Brooklyn, New York, for a better life for her and her 4-year-old twins, her sister said. “A life that was taken from her prematurely,” she said.
Around 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Sharelle Johnson was fatally shot while holding one of her children in her arms in a home in the 2400 block of Phillips Avenue in Greensboro, multiple media outlets reported.
A 20-year-old man also was shot and was being treated at a hospital, WFMY reported.
The suspect, 23-year-old Deon Lamar Monk, was charged with first-degree murder, first-degree attempted murder and other offenses, WGHP reported.
An Amber Alert was issued for a 9-month-old boy after Monk drove from the home with the child, according to WGHP. The child was not Sharelle Johnson’s.
Authorities arrested Monk in Harnett County Friday and returned the 9-month-old to his mother, WXII reported.
Nynita Johnson started a GoFundMe in hopes people will help with her funeral expenses and the care of her kids.
Johnson loved to be around her family, her sister said.
“She was an amazing mother,” Nynita Johnson said. “She wanted the world for her children. She had dreams and goals that were senselessly taken away. Now her kids, siblings, family and friends are left to keep her memory going for her beautiful kids. Gun violence needs to stop.”
All donations will go to Sharelle Johnson’s Home Going Services and to her children’s needs.

By 6:30 p.m. Sunday, 84 donors had given a total of $5,612 on the site.
