Falcons sign Raiders castoff Bruce Irvin

Yahoo Sports

Jon Gruden and the Oakland Raiders didn’t have any use for defensive end Bruce Irvin anymore, but one of the hottest teams in the NFL was happy to scoop him up.

Since Irvin was cut by Oakland it seemed like the Atlanta Falcons were a good fit, given that Irvin and Falcons coach Dan Quinn were together in Seattle years ago. And it became official on Wednesday.

It’s yet another sign that the 4-4 Falcons, who are on a three-game winning streak, feel pretty good about their chances of making a second-half push for the playoffs.

Bruce Irvin can help the Falcons

Atlanta started 1-4, mostly because of a defense that was torn apart by injuries. But the Falcons have won three in a row since then and still have the talent to get back in the wild-card race.

Irvin should presumably help. His history with Quinn is obviously a factor. Irvin was the Seahawks’ first-round pick in 2014, and with Quinn as his defensive coordinator there for two seasons, he had 88 tackles, 8.5 sacks and three interceptions.

Irvin hadn’t done much for the Raiders, with three sacks on a terrible defense, but he can give the Falcons a decent boost as a pass rusher.
