Falcons sign DT Jacob Tuioti-Mariner to one-year extension

The Atlanta Falcons have released multiple players since head coach Arthur Smith and general manager Terry Fontenot came aboard, but the team had yet to re-sign anyone until Thursday afternoon.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Falcons have signed defensive tackle Jacob Tuioti-Mariner to a one-year extension.

Tuioti-Mariner, 24, played in all 16 games last season for Atlanta, finishing with 31 tackles (24 solo), five QB hits, three fumble recoveries and one sack.

Atlanta released veteran guard James Carpenter on Wednesday, and passed on placing the franchise tag on safety Keanu Neal. The team was roughly $14 million over the 2021 salary cap before signing Tuioti-Mariner, according to OverTheCap.com’s projections.

The NFL’s free agency period kicks off on March 17, but the Falcons will have to create more cap space to sign any major free agents.
