Fairmont girls tennis beats East Duplin in dual-team 2nd round
Oct. 26—FAIRMONT — The Fairmont girls tennis team earned a convincing 6-2 win over East Duplin in the third round of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association's 2A dual-team state playoffs at home on Wednesday.
Fairmont (13-0), the No. 3 seed in the 2A East Region, won four of the six singles matches over No. 6 East Duplin (12-2). The Golden Tornadoes then won both doubles matches that were completed to clinch the victory.
Fairmont will travel to No. 2 Research Triangle (15-0) in the fourth round on Monday, with the winner advancing to the 2A East Regional championship on Wednesday. Research Triangle defeated No. 10 North Johnston in the third round Wednesday.
Madalynn Godwin got the Golden Tornadoes' first win of the afternoon with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Panthers' Maggie Ray Bradshaw. Skyler McNeill quickly followed with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Katelyn Jones, giving Fairmont the 2-0 lead in the overall match.
Fairmont's Addison Waldo and Helen Boeshore each won closely-contested matches to extend Fairmont's lead to 4-0. Waldo won the first set over Jamesan Blizzard 7-6, with a 7-5 tiebreak win, before taking the second set 6-1. Boeshore won the first set over Kinsley Bond 6-3 before winning the second set 7-6; she trailed the tiebreak 4-1 before coming back to win it 7-5.
East Duplin stayed alive in the match by winning the final two singles matches. Audrey Sutton beat Shylylia Barksdale 3-6, 6-1, 10-5; Kate Miller defeated Jaelynn Hayes 6-1, 6-1.
In doubles, Boeshore/Waldo dominated Bond/Jones in an 8-1 win, while Godwin/McNeill topped Blizzard/Bradshaw 8-2; Godwin/McNeill stayed undefeated on the season in dual-team doubles matches.
