Former Florida kicker Eddy Pineiro and his father, Eddy Sr., were honored by the Gainesville Police for stopping a woman from being assaulted.
Pineiro and his father were given Police Service Awards for “selfish acts and extreme bravery.”
Pineiro and his father, who was visiting Gainesville from Miami, were awoken by the sounds of two people arguing in the early morning hours of Oct. 15. The younger Pineiro saw a woman being “grabbed, thrown to the ground and choked” by her boyfriend. The two “ran down three flights of stairs and across the property to intervene,” allowing the woman to flee.
“The suspect gave chase and was able to catch her. At this same time, Eddy Jr. caught up and was able to grab the attacker off of the victim. This gave the victim a chance to leave the area without further violence,” the police said. “Due to Eddy Jr. and Eddy Sr.’s selfless acts and extreme bravery, the victim was saved from possible severe injuries or even death.”

Thanks to Pineiro Jr.’s help, police said, the suspect “is currently serving jail time for his actions.”
Pineiro left Florida after the 2017 season to declare for the NFL draft. As a junior, he made 17 of his 18 field goal attempts and finished his career converting on 38 of 43 tries. His career 88.4 field goal percentage is tops in Florida program history.
