With their starting quarterback’s status in serious doubt for Sunday’s playoff game, the Dolphins also are in serious danger of facing Buffalo without their leading running back, Raheem Mostert.

Mostert sustained a broken thumb against the Jets on Sunday, leaving his status very much in doubt for Sunday’s playoff game at Buffalo, according to a source (1 p.m., CBS). [Update: McDaniel confirmed the broken thumb late Monday afternoon].

The nature of the thumb injury sustained by Mostert on Sunday against the Jets typically sidelines running backs for multiple weeks. Grasping and carrying the ball becomes nearly impossible with this type of injury.

Mostert’s injury makes a Dolphins win in Buffalo even more difficult, considering Tagovailoa’s precarious status. After 14 days in concussion protocol, doctors have not given him clearance to enter the final stages of protocol, which includes some light on-field work. Coach Mike McDaniel will be asked for an update at a late-afternoon Monday news conference.

Mostert was the Dolphins’ best offensive player in their 32-29 loss at Buffalo on Dec. 17, carrying 17 times for 136 yards (an 8.0 average).

He finished the season with a career-high 891 yards rushing on 181 carries, a 4.9 per carry average. He also caught 31 passes for 202 yards. He scored three touchdowns, including two on the ground.

Mostert played well Sunday (11 carries, 71 yards, 6.5 average) before leaving with the injury.

Without Mostert, the Dolphins would need to rely on Jeff Wilson and Salvon Ahmed, the only other running backs on the roster.

Since his trade-deadline acquisition from San Francisco, Wilson ran 84 times for 392 yards (a 4.7 average) and three touchdowns. He also caught 12 passes for 94 yards and a touchdown.

Wilson played well against the Jets, with 16 carries for 72 yards (a 6.5 average). He missed the Dec. 17 game at Buffalo because of an injury.

Including his carries in San Francisco this season, Wilson averaged 4.9 per carry. Mostert and Wilson finished tied for 11th in the league with that 4.9 per carry average.

Ahmed had only 12 carries for 64 yards this season (a 5.3 average) but had a key seven-yard run (his only carry of the game) to set up Jason Sanders’ 50-yard game-winning field goal against the Jets.

The Dolphins have one running back on their practice squad — La’Michal Perine — and he could be elevated Sunday.

Miami’s only other running back, Myles Gaskin, is on injured reserve and not eligible to return this week.

Mostert and Wilson will be unrestricted free agents after this season, and Ahmed will be a restricted free agent.

Meanwhile, Brandon Shell, who started 11 games at right tackle, will undergo an MRI on Monday to determine if there’s damage to a knee that was injured against the Jets. Shell, who also has an ankle injury, was replaced by Robert Hunt, who moved over from right guard. Robert Jones took over for Hunt at right guard.

The Dolphins’ offensive line remains beaten up. Left tackle Terron Armstead missed Sunday’s game with four injuries, primarily a hip problem, and his status for Sunday’s Bills game is in question. Left guard Liam Eichenberg left the Jets game briefly with an arm injury before returning.

If Armstead can play Sunday and Shell cannot, the Dolphins could use either Hunt or Greg Little at right tackle, depending on whether they would prefer to have Little or Jones in the lineup.

If neither Armstead nor Shell can play, the Dolphins could begin the Bills game with the lineup that finished Sunday’s game, with Little and Hunt at tackle.

Backup offensive tackle Kendall Lamm missed Sunday’s game with an ankle injury and two other tackles are on injured reserve - Austin Jackson (ankle) and Eric Fisher (calf). It’s unclear if Lamm would be healthy enough to play on Sunday if needed.

Also, receivers Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle are both dealing with ankle injuries, but both finished the Jets game.
