ESPN’s Zach Lowe suggests some of us are ‘sleeping on Boston’ this season

ESPN’s Zach Lowe had some kind words for the Boston Celtics‘ potential in a recent column using his own highly subjective means of ranking tiers of teams for the 2021-22 NBA season. And while he did place the Celtics among teams billed “someone is falling into the play-in race” along with the Atlanta Hawks, Miami Heat, and Philadelphia 76ers, Lowe relates that he sees Boston as second-least likely among those teams to do so.

“People are sleeping on Boston. The Celtics are deep, with the makings of a top-5-ish defense,” observes Lowe, who suggests he is among the those tentative believers in a potential two-big lineup of Al Horford and Robert Williams III as well.

“Don’t fixate on Al Horford potentially starting games in what appears to be an antiquated double-big arrangement,” he suggests.

“It might actually work given the collective passing between Horford and Williams,” he added, “and the ability of Brown and Tatum to knife through tight corridors.”

Additionally, despite the Georgia native having played shooting guard and some forward for much of the last two seasons, Lowe writes “Boston will play Brown at power forward a ton.”

“If either Grant Williams or Juancho Hernangomez proves a reliable bridge between those two lineup types, Boston is in business,” finishes Lowe.

While the Celtics may not prove to be true contenders without some seriously impressive growth from one of their All-Star wings or perhaps Timelord, we do agree that this team could very well be better than a lot of analysts are expecting, so long as they learn to play as a team.

Particularly on defense.
