Rutgers football’s 22-21 win at Boston College over the weekend certainly caught the attention of some college football analysts. ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit was among those impressed with the job done by Rutgers.
It was a strong second half for Rutgers where they simply wore down their ACC opponent. Their game-winning drive late in the fourth quarter saw Rutgers march down the field in 12 plays, covering 96 yards. An Al-Shadee Salaam 23-yard touchdown drive sending Rutgers on their way to a season-opening win.
Herbstreit put the Rutgers performance among his top six of the weekend. Leading the way was Old Dominion. The Monarchs beat Virginia Tech 20-17 to start the season in an impressive fashion.
Georgia came in second after their comprehensive win over Oregon. Florida, suddenly ranked, got the Billy Napier era off to a strong start with a home win over top-10 Utah.

What was impressive about not just that final drive but the performance of Rutgers in the second half was how the Scarlet Knights were simply more physical than their opponent. Defensively, Rutgers got after the quarterback, repeatedly sending Boston College’s Phil Jurkovec to the turf. On offense, the line wore down the Eagles’ undersized front-four.
